Our partners Maria Inez Abreu and Marcio Merkl attended the AIPPI MidTerm Meeting, held in Marrakech, Morocco. At the event, they participated in study committees and discussions on the most current topics in intellectual property and office management, such as social media and influencers, FRAND licenses, mediation and arbitration, energy transition, as well as topics on AI tools for IP and mental health and well-being in the profession. Furthermore, they met with clients and foreign correspondents of ABREU, MERKL, as well as socializing with colleagues from around the world during the carefully organized receptions.

Nossos sócios e compareceram ao MidTerm Meeting, realizado em Marraquexe, Marrocos. No evento participaram de comitês de estudos, bem como das discussões dos temas mais atuais na propriedade intelectual e de gestão de escritórios, como redes sociais e influenciadores, licenças FRAND, mediação e arbitragem, transição energética, bem como temas sobre as ferramentas de IA para PI e saúde mental e bem-estar na profissão. ABREU, MERKL will attend the AIPPI MidTerm Meeting, to be held in Marrakech, Morocco, from 05-06.Feb.2026. The event will discuss the most current topics in intellectual property, including those relevant to the age of influence, the audiovisual industry, the energy transition, and issues of mental health and well-being in the profession. AIPPI is the International Association for the Protection of Intellectual Property, the world's leading non-profit association dedicated to the development and improvement of laws for the protection of intellectual property, with over 8,000 members worldwide.

The year 2026 has already begun with a meeting of the Special Committee on Intellectual Property of the Federal Council of the Brazilian Bar Association (OAB), where our partner Maria Inez Abreu, serves as Secretary.
At the end of 2025, our partner Marcio Merkl, as President of the Intellectual Property Committee of the Brazilian Bar Association - Parana Sectional (OAB/PR), participated in the closing luncheon of the OAB/PR Committees. As a Counselor of Center for Dispute Resolution, Mediation and Arbitration in Intellectual Property (CSD-ABPI) and as Secretary Director of Brazilian Association of Intellectual Property (ABPI) in the outgoing administration, respectively, Márcio and Maria Inez participated in the Confraternization and Inauguration of the new boards of ABPI and Brazilian Association of Industrial Property Agents (ABAPI), which took place in Rio de Janeiro. Finally, Maria Inez, Institutional Director of Parana Section of the Law Firms Study Center (CESA/PR), participated in the year-end event, which included an important lecture on balance and resilience in the legal profession, followed by a dinner with leading figures in the legal profession from the past and the new generation.

ABREU, MERKL's end-of-year card is dedicated to the personalities who passed away this year and who made a difference in the development of humanity through their creations. Luís Fernando Veríssimo (1936-2025), renowned Brazilian writer, humorist, cartoonist, and journalist, known for his witty and ironic chronicles that captured Brazilian daily life, politics, and customs, creating iconic characters and publishing more than 80 books, in addition to working as a musician (saxophonist) and screenwriter, leaving a great legacy in Brazilian literature and humor. May his reflection bring us new perspectives that challenge us to think and create in 2026!

ABREU, MERKL supports the activities of “Amigos do HC”, an organization that works to improve care for SUS (Brazilian public healthcare system) patients, promote health, and guarantee rights, making a difference in the lives of many people. Therefore, we periodically make donations or support the programs they organize. The nearly 24 years of physical files from our firm, digitized over the years, have been transformed into donated physical folders to help organize the entity!

Our partner Maria Inez Abreu, Secretary of the Special Committee on Intellectual Property of the Federal Council of the Brazilian Bar Association (OAB), served as secretary for the final meeting of 2025, dedicated to the strategic alignment of relevant themes for 2026. As Pedagogical Coordinator of the course "IP Proceedings: Civil and Criminal Proceedings and Alternative Dispute Resolution Procedures” organized by Higher School of Law (ESA/PR) and IP Committee with the support of Brazilian Association of Intellectual Property (ABPI), Paraná Lawyers Institute (IAP) and Parana Section of the Law Firms Study Center (CESA/PR), she successfully concluded the course with an extraordinary lecture on "Mechanisms for resolution, prevention and management of conflicts in Intellectual Property". Also, as Secretary General of Paraná Lawyers Institute (IAP), she participated in the closing luncheon for the 2026 activities, with the presence of important authorities from the legal profession, academia and the judiciary. As President and Academic Director of the Intellectual Property Committee of Brazilian Bar Association - Parana Sectional (OAB/PR), respectively, our partners Marcio Merkl and Maria Inez participated in the last meeting of the Committee followed by a gathering of members.

Marcio Merkl, President of the IP Committee of Brazilian Bar Association - Parana Sectional (OAB/PR), attended to the meeting of the Board of Committee Presidents of the Institution. Furthermore, representing the president of the Bar Luiz Pereira, Márcio was part of the opening panel of the XIX Congress on Copyright and Public Interest (CODAIP), organized by the Study Group on Copyright and Industrial Law (GEDAI) linked to the Postgraduate Program in Law at the Federal University of Paraná, and also opened the workshop organized by the Committee during the Congress.
Maria Inez Abreu, General Secretary of Paraná Lawyers Institute (IAP), participated in the unveiling ceremony of the plaque marking the acquisition of the entirety of the Institute's headquarters, a historic and important achievement of the administration. As Institutional Director of Parana Section of the Law Firms Study Center (CESA/PR), she participated in an event to discuss business development in the legal market. In the final stretch of the course "IP Proceedings: Civil and Criminal Proceedings and ADR Procedures” organized by Higher School of Law (ESA/PR) and IP Committee with the support of the Brazilian Association of Intellectual Property (ABPI), IAP, and CESA/PR, Maria Inez hosted an interesting class on judicial measures in Industrial Designs. She also lectured on the regulation of the recognition of acquired distinctiveness of trademarks at the "Practical Workshop on Trademark Law: New INPI Rules" held during the CODAIP, and, as the academic coordinator of the IP Committee, she also acted as organizer of the aforementioned workshop, which had institutional support from Brazilian Association of Industrial Property Agents (ABAPI) and Committee on Cultural Affairs of the OAB/PR.

A Comissão de PI da OAB/PR organizou a “Oficina Prática de Direito Marcário: Novas Regras do INPI” no XIX Congresso de Direito de Autor e Interesse Público (CODAIP), organizado pelo Grupo de Estudos em Direito Autoral e Industrial (GEDAI) vinculado ao Programa de Pós-Graduação em Direito da Universidade Federal do Paraná ().

Our partner Marcio Merkl, President of the Intellectual Property Committee of the Brazilian Bar Association - Parana Sectional (OAB/PR), chaired a meeting of the Committee, which, in addition to the regular agenda, included a lecture and debate on the topic “Legal Protection of Trade Secrets”.
As Secretary General of Paraná Lawyers Institute (IAP), our partner Maria Inez Abreu sat on a panel at a very important event on Constitutional Amendment No. 136/2025 with Judge Ramon de Medeiros Nogueira, member of the National Committee on Precatórios of FONAPREC (National Forum on Precatórios) of the National Council of Justice, and Dr. Luiz Fernando Casagrande Pereira, President of the Brazilian Bar Association Paraná Section (OAB/PR). Previously, she served as secretary for the meeting of the Institute's Board of Directors, Council, and Departments. Also, earlier this month, Maria Inez spoke about the regulation of the recognition of "acquired distinctiveness" (known as secondary meaning) of trademarks in Brazil at the 7th Midwest Business Law Congress of the Brazilian Bar Association Goiás Section (OAB/GO), organized by Committee on Corporate Law of the OAB/GO and supported by Brazilian Association of Intellectual Property (ABPI). On the way to the event, as Secretary Director of ABPI, she served as secretary for the last meeting of the Executive Committee and Board of Directors of the management.
