A Special Place in Our Hearts
( it’s a good personal story )
This video brings back so many memories and fills my heart with warmth. Back in Pennsylvania with my husband Brett Popiny, we owned a brick-and-mortar candle store called Shane & Pepper Candle Company, and it was so much more than just a shop.
We weren’t just making candles—we were building a community where everyone, no matter their ability, had a place to shine. We partnered with local schools and organizations to provide social and life skills training for people of All Abilities. Every candle was handcrafted with love, from choosing scents to helping customers find the perfect one. It was more than just a job; it was a chance for everyone to feel valued, included, and capable.
Here, you’ll see me, Alexandra, ( they call me marie up north) helping our sweet friend learn how to vacuum—something she absolutely loved. It’s the little moments like these that made our store so special. I miss this place every day, but the memories and the impact we made will always stay in our hearts.
A little backstory: Our store was named after our son, Shane, who has cerebral palsy and is on the spectrum, and his incredible service dog, Pepper. Pepper was by Shane’s side every day at school since elementary, giving him independence and confidence. Now that Shane is in high school, Pepper is retired due to health issues, but their bond is as strong as ever. Shane has won multiple awards for his advocacy and work within the All Ability community. This store wasn’t just a business—it was a stepping stone for so many, helping individuals of All Abilities gain real-world skills, independence, and a sense of belonging. And that’s what mattered most.
