Introducing Cause of Action, a new podcast hosted by Walkup shareholder Spencer Pahlke for law students interested in the plaintiff’s side.

On the show, Spencer and his co-host Marissa Lambert sit down with some of the country’s leading plaintiffs’ attorneys to hear not only about their successes, but more importantly, how they got there. Through these conversations, the podcast highlights the path forward and offers insight to help more students find their way to careers representing plaintiffs. The podcast is produced by Senior Producer Peter Arcuni and Executive Producer Gabe Rivin. Walkup, Melodia, Kelly + Schoenberger is proud to serve as the presenting sponsor.

About the Cause of Action Podcast:

A show about building a thriving legal career and practicing law that can change the world.

In law school, you often hear a standard narrative. You can go into Big Law. Or you can get a job in government or nonprofits. In other words, you can either make money or do good in the world. But not both. Cause of Action with Spencer Pahlke dispels this myth, showing law students that there’s a third path: working as a plaintiffs’ attorney. With plaintiffs’ law, you can make a good living while fighting for causes you care about, from civil rights to environmental protection to corporate fraud.

Each episode, San Francisco-based plaintiffs’ attorney and UC Berkeley Law instructor Spencer Pahlke sits down with one of the top attorneys in the country, exploring what they do, and how law students can find a job they’ll love.

On the inaugural episode, Spencer is joined by veteran plaintiffs' attorney and Stanford Law lecturer Shanin Specter.

Helen Lawless, Benjamin Present, and Mark Fuchs - assisted by JoAnne McGahan, Gina Avitello, and Jill Rice - obtained a $7.8 million verdict on behalf of the estate of Justin King. Justin King was a freshman at Bloomsburg University when he fell to his death after being served alcohol at a fraternity rush party at a sorority house. The jury found the national sorority organization liable for its negligence, as well as for violating the Anti-Hazing Statute. The trial team said, “The jury’s award makes clear that national Greek organizations cannot turn a blind eye to rampant drinking and policy violations on college campuses.

Justin King, then an 18-year-old freshman from Gilbertsville, died at Bloomsburg University in 2019 following a night of drinking at a fraternity rush party.
