A recent victory before the First-tier Tribunal (Tax Chamber) demonstrates the importance of testing evidence carefully and challenging assumptions.

Representing a lorry driver under the Direct Access scheme, Matei Clej successfully overturned customs and excise civil evasion penalties of almost £60,000.

The Tribunal found that HMRC had failed to prove dishonesty, placing particular emphasis on the distinction between an alleged admission and what was actually said during the investigation.
