âRV there yet? Not by a long shot!â
Meet Ruben, a Denver local who stepped up to volunteer with the Caravan of Hope during our recent stop in the Mile High City.
Rubenâs story is a perfect example of why we do what we do: he didnât just come to helpâhe came because he needed help, too.
In the middle of his volunteer shift, Ruben and I sat down with the real boss, Niko, to get some long-overdue guidance on estate planning.
Like so many of us, Ruben wanted to ensure his husband and his future were protected, but navigating the legal system can be a daunting, expensive, andâletâs be honestâsometimes a non-affirming experience.
The Caravan of Hope is a ârolling resistanceââa 32-foot RV tour traveling 4,800 miles to bring free legal services directly to the LGBTQ+ community. This mission is about more than just paperwork; itâs about providing a safe, discreet, and expert space for those who need it most.
Whether itâs in a bustling city like Denver or a rural town where resources are scarce, weâre providing:
⢠Name Changes & Gender Markers: Helping folks navigate the evolving (and often hostile) legal landscape to ensure their IDs reflect who they truly are.
⢠Estate Planning: Basic wills, powers of attorney, and healthcare directives to protect our families.
⢠General Legal Guidance: Providing a roadmap for employment discrimination, adoption, and more.
It was a âwonderful experienceâ to not only give back to the local community but to receive the support Ruben needed in return. We are incredibly grateful for volunteers like Ruben and for the Denver community for welcoming us with open arms.
The tour continues, and we arenât stopping until the legal gap for LGBTQ+ folks is closed.
