Did you know there are several kinds of major life events that can affect your filing requirements, tax benefits and withholding? It could be marriage, birth or death of a child, divorce or loss of spouse.
Marriage- Getting married may affect a taxpayers filing status, tax withholdings, and eligibility for certain tax beneifts. Did you know that if you get married on December 31st you are considered married for the whole year. Your marital status on Dec 31 is the status you are on your tax return. Your options are married Filing Jointly or Married filing Seperate.
Birth or adoption of a child- A new child may make taxpayers eligible for tax beneifts.
Divorce or legal seperation- Getting divorced or legally seperated affects filing status, who can claim a dependant, and eligibility for certain credits and deductions
Death of a spouse or family member- If your spouce or child is alive just one day during the current tax year you are able to claim them. There are several tax changes that will affect your future returns.
After any major life events, taxpayers should review their withholding and talk with your tax professional to get a good idea of any changes and how to adjust your withholdings to make your life changes smoother.
