Living on the Texas Coast means trying to get out on the water whenever you can, especially if you’re lucky enough to have your own boat.
However, the reality is that open water (and other boaters) can be unpredictable, and boating collisions and accidents can happen faster than most people realize.
Before you even think about hitting the high seas or cruising the flats for reds, consider these five basic safety tips for boaters in Texas:
1. Always Wear Your Life-Jacket (PFD): Texas law requires that a Coast Guard-approved life jacket be readily available for every person on board, and children under 13 must keep their life jackets on at all times, no matter what.
2. Use the Engine Cut-Off Switch: make sure you secure the engine cut-off (kill) switch to your wrist or life jacket before starting your boat. If the driver of your boat falls overboard the kill-switch will immediately stop the engine. This prevents the boat from circling back and hitting anyone who fell in the water.
3. Stay Sober: Operating a boat under the influence (BUI) is illegal in Texas. Alcohol use is one of the top causes of fatal boating accidents. Make sure your driver is completely sober so they can properly navigate waterways and obstacles.
4. Watch the Weather: Texas weather can shift rapidly, bringing sudden winds, storms or lightning. If the weather seems even a little iffy, consider rescheduling for everyone’s safety.
5. Carry Required Safety Gear: Make sure your boat is stocked with all mandatory equipment, like a working fire extinguisher (required for motorboats), a loud horn or whistle, navigation lights for use at night, and a throwable flotation device.
