Not every family law matter requires the same level of legal involvement, but some situations are significantly more complex than they appear at the start.

Cases involving contested parenting schedules, relocation, business ownership, or significant financial assets often become difficult to manage without legal guidance. Even small missteps early in the process can have long-term consequences.

While some matters may begin amicably, they can shift quickly when emotions or financial stakes change.

We believe in clarity, not escalation. Our role is to help clients understand when legal support is essential and when a simpler approach may still be appropriate: https://rizzoyoung.biz/blockreid

Celebrating a decade of dedication.

Today, we mark Gabriela O. Asrow's 10-year anniversary with Block Reid. Gabriela joined us in spring 2016, when the firm was known as Hoffenberg & Block. She has grown into one of our most accomplished family law advocates.

Gabriela counsels clients across divorce and parentage matters, from allocation of parental responsibilities to property division and domestic violence cases. She balances settlement and litigation with skill, always advocating for her clients' goals.

This year brought fresh recognition. Gabriela earned spots on both Super Lawyers and Leading Lawyers in 2026.

In her words: "Here's to the next 10 years."

Congratulations, Gabriela. We are proud to have you leading the way.

You’ll still hear the word “custody” in everyday conversation, but in Illinois family law, that term no longer exists.

Illinois courts now use the phrase Allocation of Parental Responsibilities, which reflects a more detailed approach to decision-making and parenting time.

While the terminology has changed, the concerns behind it haven’t: where the child lives, who makes major decisions, and how parenting time is structured.

Understanding the difference matters because the legal framework is more specific than the language many people are used to. Small misunderstandings at the beginning can lead to bigger confusion later in the process.

We help clients translate the legal terms into clear, practical expectations so they can focus on what matters most: their children and their future stability: https://rizzoyoung.biz/blockreid

In certain Illinois parenting cases, the court may appoint a Guardian ad Litem or Child Representative. The appointment supports the court's decision-making process.

The role exists strictly to serve the child's/children's best interests. Not the parents'.

A GAL or Child Representative may interview family members and gather collateral information. They may also review relevant school or medical records when needed. The goal is a clearer picture, supported by context rather than assumptions.

Block | Reid accepts these appointments in Cook County matters. The focus stays on stability, consistency, and long-term well-being.

May is Family Wellness Month, a reminder that strong families are built on more than legal structures. They’re supported by communication, stability, and overall well-being.

In family law, we often see how emotional, financial, and day-to-day stress can impact the health of a family. Prioritizing wellness, whether through routines, open communication, or support systems, can make a meaningful difference during times of transition.

At Block | Reid, our work is grounded in a Families First approach, helping clients create outcomes that support not just legal resolution, but long-term stability. https://rizzoyoung.biz/blockreid

Even after a parenting plan is in place, conflict doesn’t always end.

Parenting coordination is designed to help co-parents reduce ongoing friction, improve communication, and create consistency in day-to-day parenting decisions without repeatedly returning to court.

At Block | Reid, we approach parenting coordination through a Families First lens. The goal is simple: keep the focus on the children while helping parents implement their agreements in a practical, sustainable way.

From communication breakdowns to scheduling conflicts, parenting coordination provides structure, accountability, and a path forward.
