Founded in 1874, The Chicago Bar Association is one of the oldest and most active metropolitan bar associations in the United States. The Association's voluntary membership of 22,000 consists largely of lawyers and judges from Cook County and the State of Illinois. However, we do have a growing out-of-state membership of lawyers who want to take advantage of the Association's many membership services and benefits.

It was an inspiring evening at the Chicago Bar Association Alliance for Women Annual Awards and Kickoff Reception last night! Two phenomenal women leaders in the law were honored.

The Founder’s Award, given to women who have demonstrated a sustained, active commitment to the advancement of women throughout their careers, was awarded to Justine Gottshall, Co-Managing Partner at InfoLawGroup LLP.

The Alta May Hulett Award, named for the first woman lawyer in Illinois and awarded to a woman who meets the Founder’s Award criteria but has been qualified to practice law for fifteen years or less, was awarded to Eunice Buheler, General Counsel, G2

With early voting set to begin October 1st, it's time to get prepared! The CBA's judicial evaluations, available at www.chicagobar.org/votejudges, help voters learn about judicial candidates for retention and election before heading out to vote.

Judicial elections rarely generate the same attention as contests for mayor, governor, or president, but the lawyers elected to the bench shape our justice system in profound and lasting ways. That is why being informed, especially when voting for judges, matters.

The CBA's Judicial Evaluation Committee conducts nonpartisan evaluations through a comprehensive, peer-to-peer review process as a long-standing public service. The result of those evaluations is the CBA's Judge Smart Pocket Guide, which is available in English, Polish, and Spanish, and can be downloaded or printed here: www.chicagobar.org/votejudges.

Congratulations to Ray J. Koenig, CBA President 2023-2024, on his upcoming induction into the Chicago LGBTQ Hall of Fame. The Chicago LGBT Hall of Fame honors Chicago’s people and entities, nominated by the community, who have made significant contributions to the quality of life or well-being of the LGBT community and the city of Chicago.

Ray will be honored for advancing Chicago’s LGBTQ+ community through marriage-equality advocacy, leadership at Chicago House and Social Service Agency, anti-discrimination public service, and his historic visibility as the first openly LGBTQ+ president of The Chicago Bar Association.

The Annual Chicago LGBT Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony is scheduled for Thursday, November 5, 2026, at 5:30 PM at the Chicago History Museum, 1601 N. Clark, Chicago. The ceremony is free and open to the public. To register, go to chicagolgbthalloffame.org/RSVP
