March is recognized as National Cerebral Palsy Awareness Month.
March is dedicated to raising awareness about cerebral palsy (CP),
a neurological condition that affects movement, muscle tone, posture, and coordination, often caused by brain damage before, during, or shortly after birth. The observance was established in 2006 to highlight the need for increased research, improved healthcare, and greater public understanding of CP. National Cerebral Palsy Awareness Day is observed on March 25th, which falls within the month-long awareness campaign.

Purpose and Activities
The month aims to educate the public, promote inclusion, and support individuals living with CP. Activities include:
Wearing green, the official color for CP awareness, to show solidarity.

Advocacy and policy engagement, encouraging support for research funding and accessibility improvements.

Community events and fundraising, such as virtual challenges, local gatherings, and social media campaigns like .

Educational outreach, including sharing information about CP, its types, and the challenges faced by those affected.

Global and Local Impact
While the observance began in the United States, awareness efforts have expanded internationally, including initiatives in countries like Ireland and Wales. Organizations such as the Cerebral Palsy Foundation, United Cerebral Palsy, and Cerebral Palsy Alliance Research Foundation lead campaigns to improve research, healthcare, and community support for people with CP.

Recognizing March as Cerebral Palsy Awareness Month helps ensure that individuals with CP receive the resources, care, and opportunities they need, while also fostering a more inclusive society.

What does it mean that federal funding for cerebral palsy is authorized for 2026?

It means the U.S. government has officially approved funding in the 2026 budget to support cerebral palsy related research, data tracking, and programs. This helps protect and grow the work that improves understanding, care, and outcomes for people with cerebral palsy.

This does not mean a cure yet, and it does not mean direct financial assistance for families. But it does mean something meaningful. Cerebral palsy is being seen, acknowledged, and prioritized at the federal level. It means researchers can keep pushing forward, programs can continue instead of being cut, and advocacy is leading to real progress.

Change does not happen overnight, but this is proof that voices matter, persistence matters, and the future for the cerebral palsy community is being taken seriously. One step closer. Always moving forward. πŸ’š

We’re pleased to share that federal funding for cerebral palsy is in place for FY 2026, following the bipartisan passage of Congressional legislation that includes continued support for CDC cerebral palsy surveillance at key sites throughout the US.

Because of years of advocacy by the Cerebral Palsy Foundation, this surveillance has revealed a critical truth: cerebral palsy prevalence in the United States is not decreasing, unlike in many other countries. That data drives prevention efforts, earlier diagnosis, and better treatment options across the lifespan.

As we get ready to mark 20 years since the creation of Cerebral Palsy Awareness Month in March, we’re grateful for the CP community who has tirelessly advocated for research funding and policy change, and the bipartisan Congressional leadership that made this funding possible.
