But in Malaysia, the space above our heads is one of the most strictly regulated "real estate" zones in the country. The news is quite a while— we appeared recently in Sinar Harian ; Malaysia’s top news publisher commenting on the importance of family to consult each other and discuss on the estate administration during Eid as Eid is the best avenue for all family members to gather and discuss the matter on inheritance planning and management.

Our Managing Partner— Dr. Sharen Alzalip who is also the the Vice Chairman and Advisor of PennaWaris Sdn Bhd, came down to Jerantut together with PennaWaris’ Chairman; YBhg Dato Ahmad Nazlan Idris and its Managing Director— Dr Anne Ismail to handover food aid to the underprivileged Muslim community in Jerantut, Pahang— to aid them to celebrate the Eid.

Beyond supporting and advancing Malaysia’s digital economy through our Telecommunication, Media & Technology practice, we at Sharen Alzalip & Co. are equally committed to Estate Planning & Administration—ensuring that legacy preservation is safeguarded and managed with care and precision.

TELCO ARTS- INTERESTING SIGHTS

A few days before Hari Raya (Eid), while waiting for break fast, i passed through kampung (village) areas in Batu Pahat- Ayer Hitam-Kluang in Johor (i celebrated Eid this year in Johor).

I came across interesting sights (for me). There’s a lot of ground base telecommunication towers (GBT) of 50 to 60 meters heights; approximately. They are located quite close to one another— and can be seen clearly; because it stood high above and structure visibility is not restrained by any high rise buildings (because it is kampung area).

So you can see gigantic poles located close to one another from a distance— looks like UFOs from the outer space; full of techno gadgets attached.

Some are four legged towers and some are monopoles. I even saw guyed mast (a light version of GBT with strings attached to it to make it standing and stabilised). I missed capturing the photo— i was driving so i asked my wife to snap the photos for me.

As a telecommunication lawyer myself, this is quite an interesting sight for me— rarely seen in city areas.

Normally, the base transceiver station (BTS) in the city are located on the rooftop or it is mounted on the signboards; look at the photo with “Hotel Pintar” signboard).

At the same time, i love photography, so i asked me wife to snap photos of the four-legged, monopole GBTs and the billboard BTS for my personal collection.

I call it “Telco Arts”

By the way, this gives me idea to write an article on the telecommunication tower— which i will publish it soon.

THIS STRUCTURE CONNECTS YOU TO THE WHOLE WORLD

This is a Base Transceiver Station (BTS).

I captured this photo of the BTS in Kluang, Johor. It is located near the hotel where I was staying.

This BTS is installed on the rooftop of a building or in an elevated location.

This is what carries your voice communications, your messages, your social media comments, and your web searches across the world.

In areas with large open spaces, telecommunication towers are used. However, in urban areas, BTS structures are used and are typically placed in locations such as rooftops.

In Malaysia, from operational routine, to construct a BTS structure like this, the BTS owner must enter into a tenacy agreement with the building owner.

The space allocated for the BTS must be clearly specified in the tenancy agreement, including its perimeter measurements and a schematic site drawing.

Typically, the tenancy for a BTS site also includes the rental of an equipment room, which houses other telecommunications equipment.

In addition, the BTS owner must obtain permits or approvals from the local authority before commencing any construction, as required under the Local Government Act 1976, Town and Country Planning Act 1976, Street, Drainage and Building Act 1974 and its subsidiary legislation.

Approvals must also be obtained from other relevant authorities such as the Fire Department, the Civil Aviation Authority, and others.

These permits must be renewed annually. If they are not renewed, the local authority has the right to issue a demolition order and impose fines on the BTS owner.

Let me explain, in layman’s terms, the telecommunications components found in this BTS.

The vertical rectangular panels at the top are called antennas.

Below the antennas are other components known as Remote Radio Units (RRU), which are installed close to the antennas.

There are feeder and fiber cables running downwards, connected to an equipment room or cabinet.

This equipment cabinet or room houses other devices such as routers and also serves as the point where the power supply for the BTS is managed.

The dish-shaped equipment is called a microwave dish, which is used to transmit data or telecommunications frequency waves.

This BTS functions to transmit and receive telecommunication signals (voice and data) to be delivered to the intended telecommunications destinations.

This is what carries your communications across the world.
