Did your landlord protect your deposit properly?

By law, it should’ve been placed in a government-approved scheme within 30 days, with paperwork to prove it. If that didn’t happen, even if you’ve since moved out and got your deposit back, it’s still a breach.

You could be entitled to compensation, and you may have up to 6 years to claim.

Moved out of a rented property months, or even years, ago? You might still be owed compensation.

If your landlord didn't protect your deposit correctly at the time, whether it was protected late or you never received the right paperwork, that's still a breach, even if you got your deposit back in full and your tenancy has long ended.

Under the law, you generally have up to 6 years from the breach to make a claim.

Under the law, landlords must place your deposit into a government-approved scheme within 30 days, and give you the paperwork to prove it. If they didn't, even if you got your deposit back at the end of your tenancy, that's still a breach.

If you paid a rent deposit in the last 6 years, your landlord was legally required to protect it in a government-approved scheme within 30 days and give you the paperwork to prove it.

If they didn’t, you could be entitled to up to 3 times your deposit in compensation.
