Was your child treated by the Southwest Cleft Service at the University Hospitals Bristol and Weston NHS Foundation Trust?

An independent NHS review found that between 2020 and 2022, some children treated by the Southwest Cleft Service did not receive appropriate care.

Owen Lake, litigation executive at Slater and Gordon, is supporting families who are questioning whether their child’s care met the standard they deserved.

If you have concerns or unanswered questions about your child’s treatment, you can speak to us in confidence to understand what happened and what options may be available to you.

“Mothers aren't being listened to. They're complaining to staff, they're sent home, they're dismissed, and then tragedy ensues.”

Speaking on BBC Radio Sussex and Surrey, Holly Cossutta, Senior Associate in Medical Negligence, described a pattern she sees repeatedly in her work. Families do not come to her for compensation; they come for answers and accountability, driven by a desire to prevent others from suffering the same loss.

Maternity care should be the safest moment in a family’s life. Too often, it falls short.

Most parents who feel something was wrong with their child’s NHS care never end up taking formal action. They are looking for understanding, not litigation, and the systems that should provide that understanding are often the hardest to navigate.

Knowing what a child was entitled to is not the same as preparing to challenge anyone. It is part of how parents make sense of what happened, and part of how care improves over time.

When parents ask questions about their child’s treatment, the answers should be available to them as a matter of course. That principle has to sit at the heart of any conversation about NHS accountability.

Jack was cycling to collect a laptop he had put in for repair when a refuse lorry turned left without warning, and he was tragically killed at the scene.

In the years since, his parents have been searching for answers from the police, the coroner’s court and Sevenoaks Council, but none have been sufficiently provided. The driver remains in post, and no changes to training, safety procedures or operational standards have been shared with the family.

Slater and Gordon has taken on the legal challenge against the council, pursuing accountability on the family’s behalf where it has not been delivered elsewhere.

Cyclist deaths involving heavy goods vehicles remain one of the most consistent and preventable patterns on UK roads, and while the standards and training exist to reduce these risks, accountability to ensure they are upheld too often falls short.

“Black women are being stereotyped as having high thresholds for pain. They're dismissed on the basis that they can deal with that pain.”

Nisha Sharma, our Principal Lawyer for Medical Negligence, was speaking on BBC Radio about racism in UK maternity care, now declared a national emergency by the Nursing and Midwifery Council. Black women in the UK are more than twice as likely to die during or shortly after pregnancy than white women, and harmful assumptions like these play a significant role.

Every woman deserves to be listened to, believed, and treated as an individual, not through the lens of a harmful stereotype.

In support of APIL's Rebuilding Shattered Lives , we’re sharing Charlie’s story. Charlie’s story highlights the life-changing impact that the law on personal injury compensation can have for families whose lives are torn apart by negligence.

Children like Charlie and other victims of negligence must be at the heart of any policymaking about compensation and their right to redress. Rebuilding Shattered Lives, brings together the personal injury and clinical negligence sector to show the real people who we, as professionals, help to get their lives back on track, something we stand by and support wholly.

This year’s Action for Brain Injury Week, led by Headway, focuses on ‘isolation after a brain injury’, a quiet and often unspoken reality for survivors and their families.

Brain injury is often invisible, and the psychological impact it has on individuals is rarely acknowledged. Friendships can begin to drift without clear reason, work can become more difficult to manage, and home life often adapts around challenges that others may not fully understand.

More needs to be done by employers, the NHS and the wider public to better understand what life after brain injury really involves. Without that awareness, too many survivors are left carrying a greater share of the burden alone than they should.

Every 90 seconds, someone in the UK sustains a brain injury.

This week is Action for Brain Injury Week 💙

We spent time with Simon, who spent eight months in hospital after a catastrophic brain injury following a road traffic accident in 2023.

Today, much of his recovery is invisible.

That’s the reality for so many, the challenges people don’t see, the changes others don’t always understand, and the isolation that can follow. By sharing stories like Simon’s, we can help shine a light on the hidden impact of brain injury.

We’re proud to partner with Headway, who supports survivors and families every step of the way.

Engineered stone has become a defining feature of modern kitchen design, yet its impact on worker health is raising serious concerns.

Our industrial disease specialist, Simon Matthews, is seeing a growing number of claims linked to silica exposure, as cases of silicosis emerge far earlier than historically expected.

Containing up to 95% crystalline silica, the fabrication process can expose workers to dust linked to this severe and incurable disease.

While increased enforcement is a positive step, it prompts a broader industry question: with safer alternatives available, does this material still deserve its place in the supply chain?
