Tank removals in the downtown historic district (Wilmington) have unique challenges, mostly tight spaces and logistics. This tank was leaking through multiple large corrosion holes. Once the tank was brought into compliance (proper removal and paperwork), the State issued a “No Further Action” letter closing the incident.

At the property owners request, we conducted some additional yard grading to prevent water from draining to the garage.

PES can conduct Tank Searches and/or Tank Evaluations to determine the status of an underground oil tank. We can usually give next day service and provide a professionally sealed report documenting our findings. If no tank is found, our report can be used as a third-party verification of this fact.

Because a lot of oil tanks haven’t been used for decades, many sellers don’t even know that they have a tank buried on their property. Other sellers just don’t want to admit that there is one: “no representation.” Still if a house was built before 1970, there is probably an oil tank story to tell.

Classic tank removal project - house built in 1964: This abandoned oil tank had lots of corrosion holes. And this is a newer tank compared to most. Most oil tanks are over 70 years old! They were never meant to be in the ground this long.

This oil tank was in the back yard, turned into "the chicken’s yard,” so there wasn’t any grass when we started removing the tank. This made our impact foot print look larger than it realy was.

It was tight getting in and out of the yard: through the fence, around the carport, and under a large, low tree branch, but we made it work. It's more about finesse than speed.

I’m not sure how they installed this tank so close to the house. We didn’t want to risk damaging the foundation, so we got permission from the State to close the tank in-place. The tank still had to be opened, washed, and pumped empty. Once it was empty, the tank was filled with concrete.

We had 3 residential heating oil tanks over flow last year from heavy rain fall events. Big expensive messes!!

Don’t wait! Take your tank out now.

This tank wasn’t easy to get to, but it had to come out. Rain water had flowed into the tank causing some of the tank fuel to over flow and to contaminate soil under the house. Even though it was difficult, we removed the tank and sealed the hole in the foundation wall that allowed the overflow fuel to get under the house. It would not have been such a mess if we had taken the tank out before the over flow.

A garage and attached shed had been built on top of this 2000 gallon tank. We cut two holes in the tank top giving us a unique view into the tank during pumping, washing, and filling with concrete. The tank closure was required by the property buyer.
