Every Wrightsville boat day I take starts the same way: launching at the wildlife ramp just over the drawbridge, then idling right underneath it. If you've only ever crossed the Heide Trask Drawbridge by car, going under it by boat hits different. You hear the traffic rumbling overhead, and when it lifts, the whole span goes straight up. Boater tip: for recreational boats it opens on the hour from 7am to 7pm, so time your cruise or plan on a wait. Heads up, starting November 1 it moves to on-the-hour openings for every vessel through mid-2030 while the state rebuilds three other Wrightsville bridges. And that ramp fills up fast. New tour, new co-star. Every cruise in this series gets a vehicle, and this time we're trading the truck for the water. This is the teaser for my Wrightsville Beach boat tour, and over the next few weeks I'm taking you along for the whole journey: my quintessential, perfect local boat day, start to finish. The whole goal of these tours is to save you a flight and show you what this place actually feels like, and nothing captures Wrightsville better than seeing it from the water. Today's ride: a 2007 Carolina Skiff with a 75-horsepower Honda four-stroke. Fits seven or eight people, nothing fancy, and honestly the best first boat anyone could buy if your idea of a perfect day is hopping from sandbar to sandbar with friends. It came with a name from its previous owner that I'm legally obligated to keep using: the Scoot Pooter. I spent the day pulling my boat up to every restaurant on Wrightsville Beach. Here's my honest top 5. 🚤

Dockside is the local classic and the scariest place to dock on the island. Bluewater is the easiest pull-up with the best patio. Bridge Tender is your date night. Fish House is your sunburnt flip flop lunch. And South Beach Grill is my personal favorite, partly because the building used to be the only bank ever on Wrightsville Beach and it's survived three hurricanes.

All five are right here on the Intracoastal. If you're boating at Wrightsville Beach this fall, save this one.

Bridge Tender's casual little brother lives right next door, and it's my pick for the best salty, sunburnt, straight-off-the-boat lunch on the waterway. Fish House Grill is the one with the blue roof at the foot of the Wrightsville drawbridge, run by the same folks as the Bridge Tender. The difference is the dress code: here, flip flops and a fresh sunburn are the uniform. It opens at 11:30 for lunch (Bridge Tender doesn't open until 4), and the dog-friendly deck puts you right on the Intracoastal watching boat traffic roll by. Order the mahi tacos and a cold b**r, and add the lemon pepper fries. On food, I'd put it ahead of Dockside and right up there with Bluewater, so it really comes down to which vibe you want. This is the date night pick. The Bridge Tender sits at the foot of the Wrightsville Beach drawbridge, which is where the name comes from, and it's been there since 1976. That makes it one of the oldest restaurants in the area and the first to bring real fine dining to this stretch of the Intracoastal. Think fresh seafood, Angus steaks, and bay windows looking out at the boats. Full honesty: I haven't eaten here yet. But I've sent a lot of clients here, and every one of them comes back raving about the food and the atmosphere. StarNews readers also recently voted it one of the best waterfront restaurants in the county. Know before you go: dinner only, Tuesday through Sunday, 4 to 9pm, closed Mondays. My #1 sunset spot isn't the easiest to get to, and that's part of why it's #1. Head to the south end of Wrightsville Beach, find a parking spot if you can (it's tight, so go early), then walk out around the tip of the peninsula past the Coast Guard station. Keep going until you're facing west over Masonboro Inlet. Boats cruise through the channel, there's room to spread out, and the sun drops straight into the water in front of you. I've brought my guitar out here. Kelly and I have walked it more times than I can count. It's where we did our pregnancy announcement. Some places ground you in a way you can't explain, and this is mine. Bonus pick: park along Lumina, drop the tailgate, and watch from the back of your truck. If Dockside is where you start the boat day, Bluewater is where you end it. It sits right over the first bridge onto Wrightsville on the Intracoastal, and it's one of my favorite spots on the whole island. It's also the easiest dock on this list, with a day dock and staff standing by to help you tie off, which after Dockside feels like a gift. The vibe is a step up: throw on a nicer shirt, grab a seat on the giant patio (voted Best Outdoor Dining more than once), and watch the sportfishing boats cruise by. Order the NC-style Calabash platter: flounder, shrimp, and oysters, lightly fried the way it should be. Sandwiches run about $17 to $19, and they do brunch, lunch, and dinner. Sunday live music runs 4 to 8, but this is the last weekend of the season, so go now. And you don't need a boat; there's plenty of parking. My #2 sunset spot is the one where you don't have to choose between the view and dinner. Downtown Wilmington's Riverwalk faces straight west over the Cape Fear River, so the sun drops right over the water with the Memorial Bridge framing the shot. It's also the easiest sunset on this list to turn into a whole night. My current favorite is River 128 (the old George on the Riverwalk, fully redone last year), with around 150 seats outside and free docking if you roll up by boat. Elijah's and Michael's on the Waterfront are right there too, and the south end near the bridge is where I'd post up. My favorite part is the handoff: summer heat breaks, the lights on Water Street flicker on, and downtown starts to hum as the nightlife picks up.
