A recent report involving a former Michigan State University medical resident is a difficult reminder of how much trust patients place in the people responsible for their care.

According to reporting from the Detroit Free Press, two women have alleged that they were sexually assaulted during medical appointments with the same resident at an MSU Health Care clinic. The reporting also raised questions about what happened after the first report was made and before the physician was removed from patient care. The physician now faces criminal charges related to the allegations.

For patients, it can be incredibly difficult to know what is appropriate during a medical examination and even more difficult to speak up when something feels wrong, especially when you have placed your trust in a medical professional.

Some stories stay with you long after a case is over.

We recently received a thoughtful letter and a signed copy of You’ve Already Won from Simon Dyson, a former client, who shared more about his journey as a father and caregiver to his son, Billy, and the experiences that inspired his book.

Billy is now 24 years old. He was deprived of oxygen at birth, resulting in significant brain damage, and today lives with cerebral palsy, is nonverbal, and has a seizure disorder. These circumstances have shaped much of Simon’s journey as Billy’s father and caregiver, a journey he shares in You’ve Already Won.

Simon’s reflections on Billy’s life, and his gratitude for the opportunity to give his son a life filled with love, dignity, and purpose deeply touched our entire team.

Today, Simon is turning that journey into something that can help other families through Billy's Farm Of Hopes & Dreams a place envisioned to provide connection, purpose, and support for individuals with special needs and the caregivers who love them.

We are honored to have played a small part in Billy’s story all those years ago, and we’re even more grateful to see how Simon’s journey continues to inspire hope for others.
