The Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection is working with infrastructure and engineering companies to test new technologies to reduce and/or destroy PFAS in wastewater effluent and biosolids. So far, 18 pilot tests of various materials and technologies have been conducted at wastewater treatment facilities throughout the state. The results of these pilot tests will inform the state’s future decision-making.

This week, Pennsylvania lawmakers took steps to ban the manufacture or sale of cosmetics, menstrual products, dental floss, and children’s items containing . If passed, this legislation would join a growing trend of PFAS regulatory development in many states nationwide.

New EPA interim guidance updates what we know (and what we still need to learn) about PFAS destruction & disposal. The new guidance recommends three options: use of Class 1 underground injection wells, disposal in RCRA-regulated hazardous waste landfills, or using hazardous waste combustors under specific conditions.

This week, New Mexico became the first state in the United States to classify aqueous film-forming foam (AFFF) as a hazardous waste. AFFF is a PFAS-containing substance that airports and military bases were required to use for decades for both firefighting and training exercises. The new rules, adopted by the Environmental Improvement Board, require facilities to report any AFFF remaining at their sites and enable the state to mandate cleanups after foam is discharged.
