Twenty-five years ago today, on October 7, 2001, Barry Bonds hit his 73rd home run, setting a MLB record and leading to Patrick Hayashi, represented by Minami Tamaki LLP’s Donald K. Tamaki and Michael G.W. Lee, defending himself against a lawsuit for ownership of the ball.

The resulting case, Popov v. Hayashi, became a famous property law case about ‘pre-possessory interest’ that is taught in law schools nationwide to this day.

The late Gwen Knapp of the San Francisco Chronicle was one of the journalists closely tracking the lawsuit. Swipe through to read what she had to say at the conclusion of the case.

Dale Minami delivered the keynote at this past weekend's , covered on the front page of The Inyo Register.

Min­ami said he first came to Man­zanar in 1972, and con­siders it to be “both a sac­red and hor­rific site.”

“This coun­try has got­ten worse since 2019, and my hope is that we can do bet­ter,” he said. “We can­not allow that big, polit­ical eraser to wipe us off the white­board of his­tory.”

He said the lie that Japan­ese Amer­ic­ans posed a “national secur­ity threat” dur­ing World War II was used to make them “con­sti­tu­tional orphans who were sen­tenced to indef­in­ite con­fine­ment without a trial,” and he sees the same thing hap­pen­ing to groups such as immig­rants today.

He cau­tioned that just like all three branches of gov­ern­ment had to agree to allow for the incar­cer­a­tion of Japan­ese Amer­ic­ans then, the same thing is hap­pen­ing today that allows the cur­rent pres­id­ent and his admin­is­tra­tion to go for­ward with “the rejec­tion of the rule of law.”

“Demo­cracy is fall­ing and if we don’t do something about it we will face a cata­strophe,” he said.

Minami Tamaki LLP Senior Counsel Dale Minami will keynote the 57th annual Manzanar Pilgrimage tomorrow, Saturday, April 25, 2026. Dale's remarks will relate to the theme of this year’s pilgrimage - Lessons From Manzanar: Vigilance is the Price of Democracy.

The Manzanar Committee is honored to announce that noted Civil Rights Attorney Dale Minami will be the keynote speaker at the 57th annual Manzanar Pilgrimage on Saturday, April 25, 2026. Minami is best known in the Nikkei community for coordinating the legal effort to reopen the wartime convictions of Fred Korematsu, Min Yasui, and Gordon Hirabayashi. His efforts, along with the other members of the Coram Nobis legal team, led to their cases being vacated by the court and became a major milestone in the fight for redress and reparations.

Considering that this year’s Pilgrimage theme is Lessons From Manzanar: Vigilance is the Price of Democracy, Minami is the perfect candidate to address the challenges that we face today.
