A federal judge has blocked the Trump administration’s effort to establish a fund to reimburse people who claim they were targeted by the “weaponization” of the federal government. U.S. District Judge Leonie Brinkema said the restraining order was meant to ensure that no funds are “irreversibly disbursed” before the legal fight over the newly announced fund has a chance to play out. The order from Brinkema, a Clinton appointee based in northern Virginia, will pause the establishment of the fund until at least June 12, when she has set a hearing to consider the matter further. It was an unusually urgent action by the judge, who said in her brief order that she was compelled to rule prior to a formal response from the Trump administration because of concerns that the fund might quickly begin doling out cash. In addition to the case before Brinkema, there are at least three other pending lawsuits seeking to block the fund from operating.

The temporary order halts any payments from the controversial fund.

US inflation increased at its fastest pace in three years in April, driven by higher energy prices amid the war with Iran, and cementing economists’ views that the Federal Reserve could hold interest rates unchanged well into next year. Given the soaring cost of living, Americans are growing frustrated with Donald Trump’s handling of the economy. A Reuters/Ipsos survey last week showed the president’s approval rating fell to nearly its lowest level since he returned to the White House, hit by a drop in support among Republicans. Inflation threatens his Republican party’s congressional majority in the November midterm elections.

A new currency note would be the latest example of Trump expanding his personal brand in his official capacity since returning to the White House in 2025. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said Thursday that his department has prepared the design for a $250 bill featuring President Donald Trump, anticipating the passage of stalled legislation in Congress to put the president on a new denomination of legal tender. The secretary downplayed the idea that the administration is pushing the matter, despite Trump’s penchant for infusing his name and likeness across the nation’s capital and into the observances of the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence. Yet he also insisted there is nothing inappropriate about Trump’s visage being part of the seminal national celebration. Legislation, introduced by Representative Joe Wilson, R-S.C., would direct the Treasury Department’s Bureau of Engraving and Printing to put Trump’s face on the new bill to mark the 250th anniversary of the nation’s founding. If passed and signed into law by Trump, Wilson’s bill would mark an extraordinary recognition for a sitting U.S. leader and comes as Trump has sought to place himself at the center of this year’s seminal Independence Day commemorations.

U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent confirms his agency has a design for a $250 bill featuring President Donald Trump.
