Sometimes I get asked what size vehicle is needed to haul everything to a race. So I wanted to address that in this post.

Wife and three kids in tow this weekend because of a family gathering this weekend. So all of what was shown fit in the back of my little Ridgeline, with room for 5 full size bags of family luggage. I brought a 10x10 pop up tent and weights in case of rain but ended up not needing it. A traditional finish line setup (tent, inflatable arch, weights, stanchions, bases, printer, streamers, and timing system) can fit in a mid sized sedan without too much trouble for those that are curious.

Yesterday an ART user gave me a 'virtual High-Five' an informed me that the latest RunSignUp Race Trends Report came out (link below). It shows that Agee Race Timing ranked as the third most used hardware system and the 4th most used software system for race timing. However there is some important things to point out in the results that I find very encouraging:

1. On the hardware side:
FinishLynx is primarily used for track events, so that would put ART at #2 on the hardware list for timing distance races (what I designed the system for).

2. On the software side:
"The Race Director" and "RunScore" have been around FOREVER, developed around 40 years ago by very good developers. The Race Director is no longer being developed and the creator of RunScore sold it to RaceRoster - but I'm not sure if there is any new development going on with it. So over the next few years the users of those programs eventually move to another scoring software. It will be interesting to see what scoring software those users ultimately choose to use.

This weekend was my first race using the new instant SMS feature and some new hardware that I was eager to try out. This was a fairly small event, and the park didn't turn the power on until 10 minutes before the start of the race. However I wanted to record a video because I I thought other timers would appreciate seeing what all I try to do for my races as a "one man show".

There are a lot of other features built into the software that I didn't set up for this race. For larger races my head timer comes with me and we can do a lot more of course. We only charge for "timing", so our less experienced crews may only offer basic chip timing and finish line photos and videos. As they gain experience and get comfortable with the basics, they will add on more features for everyone's enjoyment.

Basically I offer as many features as I have room to bring in my truck. I've been reluctant to buy a trailer because of having to store it when not in use and how much of a target they are for thieves. So my goal has always been to keep things as compact as possible so that everything fits in my truck. The "basics" can fit in the truck of a car.

Hopefully this video gives other timers ideas on features you may want to offer your races.
