Please join me in wishing a Happy Heavenly Birthday to my Mother - Dr. Cynthia Chapel. Her love and affection is deeply missed. I enjoyed spending time with my Mom and today would have been a great time with grandchildren around, laughter, the prettiest smile, fish tacos, BBQ, grilled shrimp, a fun floral arrangement, gifts large and small, and love that only a mother can share.

My Mom read to us and instilled a curiosity in my sister and I that is still with us and our families. Want to know what happens at the Court of Appeals? Attend this set of hearings! It is free and a great opportunity to see good stuff that is happening in the Courts.

The Missouri Court of Appeals, Western District, is scheduled to convene court Wednesday, March 13, 2024, at William Woods University in Fulton. The arguments are scheduled to begin at 9:30 a.m. in the Bernard J. Weitzman Model Courtroom, located in the Burton Business and Economics Building on campus.

A three-judge panel consisting of Chief Judge Gary Witt, Judge Alok Ahuja and Judge Ted Ardini will hear oral arguments in four cases on the docket. After the oral arguments, the judges will take time to discuss the court system, explain the proceedings, and take questions from the audience.

Witt will preside over the proceedings at William Woods. He was appointed to the Western District in 2010. Immediately prior to his appointment, he served as an associate circuit judge in Platte County (the 6th Judicial Circuit). Ahuja joined the Western District in 2007. Previously, he practiced law in Washington, D.C., and Kansas City. Ardini was appointed to the Western District in 2016. He previously served as counsel to the Missouri attorney general and then as counsel to the governor.

The court regularly convenes court in Kansas City at its courthouse. For more than 25 years, however, the court has held session in several of the 45 counties in the court’s jurisdiction, which includes all of northwest Missouri and most of central Missouri.

The court convenes oral arguments outside of Kansas City to give individuals an opportunity to observe a part of the judicial system they normally do not see and to familiarize those attending with the court's role in the judicial system.

The judges of the Missouri Court of Appeals, Western District are appointed and put forward to the voters for retention under the constitutional powers of The Missouri Plan.
