After we filed a mandamus lawsuit, she was interviewed in two months and received her decision one week later. ⚖️ Here are four benefits you should know. 1. Continued pressure. Your case can sit for months or years after the interview. With mandamus, a federal judge is watching, and we don’t dismiss the lawsuit until you receive your final decision. 📄 2. Better communication. Your attorney can communicate with Department of Justice lawyers who may help move your case forward. 3. Nevada’s economy could lose $441 million by the end of this year because of the Trump administration’s immigration policies. 🚨 The Nevada Current reports that an analysis from FWD.us links those losses to people losing their legal immigration status. Roughly 15,000 Nevadans could lose their legal protections. About 7,000 residents hold government-authorized work permits, mostly in construction and hospitality, and each industry could lose around 2,000 workers. The report also warns that up to 4,000 U.S. citizen children could be affected. 👨‍👩‍👧 Around 80,000 immigrants in Nevada hold some form of protected status, including DACA, Temporary Protected Status (TPS), pending asylum, or U visas. About 52,000 rely on work permits and contribute an estimated $1.8 billion to the state’s economy every year. 📊 The losses are already happening as the Trump administration narrows eligibility for TPS. Around 6,000 Salvadorans in Nevada received notices that their status would expire on September 9. Federal law requires the Department of Homeland Security to make a decision at least 60 days before expiration, and immigration experts say protections remain in place until the agency decides. Nationwide, roughly one million people have already lost TPS, and about 3.5 million immigrants are projected to lose their status by the end of 2028. By 2028, the analysis projects that around 34,000 Nevadans could lose their immigration status, and approximately 21,000 could also lose work authorization. ⚖️ For thousands of Nevada families, losing immigration status means losing the paycheck that keeps their household running. 💔 I’m Brian Manning. The same witness who could help win your asylum case in one forum can wreck it in another. ⚖️ The asylum office and immigration courts treat live witnesses very differently, and knowing when to use one matters. At an asylum interview, you can technically bring a witness, but asylum officers aren’t trained to question witnesses and aren’t used to changing gears mid-interview. As a former asylum officer, I can tell you that witness testimony often carries so little weight that it’s usually not worth the risk. A better strategy? Have your witnesses write declarations that become supporting evidence in your file. 📝 You get corroboration without the same risks. Immigration court is different. Judges hear live witnesses regularly, and their testimony can genuinely strengthen your case. But putting someone on the stand opens up a new opportunity for the government to challenge your credibility. Two people who experienced the same event may remember it differently. Even small differences can become am******on for a judge looking for inconsistencies. And remember, the government’s attorney can cross-examine your witness and hunt for those gaps. 🚨 The rule: a live witness should only testify if they’ve been meticulously prepared. Work closely with an immigration attorney to practice the testimony, ensure the witness supports your case, and prepare them for the tone of questioning—not just the questions themselves. There’s another risk to consider: bringing a witness to court exposes them to scrutiny. If they don’t have legal immigration status, discuss that risk with your lawyer before deciding. A prepared witness can be a strategic advantage in immigration court. An unprepared, well-meaning friend can sink everything you’ve built. 🛡️ I’m Brian Manning. Immigrant women who call 911 to escape abuse are being detained by ICE instead of receiving help. 🚨 ProPublica reports that immigrant victims of domestic violence have been arrested after calling the police and handed over to immigration agents. Some women said they were trying to escape their abusers when officers arrested them. In chaotic situations, officers sometimes made the wrong call. In Kent County, Michigan, the local jail handed over more immigrants to ICE in the first six months of 2026 than during the entire Biden administration. The county has no 287 agreement with the federal government, yet its jail still hands over most people with ICE detainers. ⚖️ Pilar, a Peruvian asylum seeker with no criminal record, was turned over to ICE after prosecutors declined to file charges. Under the Trump administration, key protections for crime victims were eliminated as ICE arrests skyrocketed. In May, a federal judge ordered the government to restore those protections while a lawsuit proceeds, but the administration appealed. One Cuban mother spent four months in detention, separated from her nursing daughter, before a judge granted her bond. 💔 Advocates warn that more victims are staying in abusive relationships because they fear calling for help—and abusers are using that fear against them. Right now, calling 911 can leave an immigrant woman detained instead of protected. 🛑 If you’re facing removal after an arrest like this, talk to a lawyer before your next hearing. I’m Brian Manning.
