Most people know wearing a seatbelt can save your life.

What many people DON’T realize is that in North Dakota, not wearing your seatbelt can also affect your injury claim after an accident.

Insurance companies may argue:

⚠️ Your injuries were worse because you weren’t restrained
⚠️ Some injuries could have been prevented
⚠️ You should receive less compensation because of it

That means your settlement or verdict could potentially be reduced.

Even when another driver caused the crash.

Seatbelts matter for more than just traffic safety — they can affect medical outcomes, liability arguments, and the value of a personal injury case.

The safest and smartest choice is always simple:
Buckle up.

Protect yourself. Protect your family. Protect your future.

One of the biggest reasons people hesitate to call 911 during a drug overdose is fear.

Fear of getting arrested.
Fear of getting someone else in trouble.
Fear of what happens when police arrive.

North Dakota’s Good Samaritan Law exists because hesitation costs lives.

Under North Dakota law, a person who seeks emergency medical help in good faith for someone experiencing a drug overdose may be protected from prosecution for certain drug-related offenses IF:

✔️ They call for medical help
✔️ They stay on scene until help arrives
✔️ They cooperate with first responders

The law may also protect the person experiencing the overdose.

The goal is simple: save lives.

If someone is unresponsive, struggling to breathe, turning blue, or you believe they may be overdosing — call 911 immediately.

Do NOT leave because you’re scared.

Minutes matter in an overdose situation.

A small decision can save a life.

Having a graduation party this weekend? It’s important to know the laws before the music gets turned up.

Both Grand Forks ordinances and North Dakota law prohibit unreasonable noise that disturbs the peace and quiet of others — especially during late-night hours.

Graduation season should create good memories — not police reports, citations, or angry neighbors.

A few simple things can go a long way:

✔️ Keep music at a reasonable level
✔️ Be mindful of quiet hours
✔️ Ask guests to respect the neighborhood
✔️ Move gatherings indoors later at night

Celebrate hard. Celebrate responsibly. Respect your community.

Graduation parties. Bonfires. Summer nights. Late drives with friends.

One bad decision can change a life forever.

If your friend has been drinking or using, do NOT let them drive.

Take the keys.
Call for a ride.
Call a parent.
Offer them a couch.
Do something.

Real friends speak up.

A DUI, crash, or fatal accident doesn’t just affect one night — it can affect school, scholarships, jobs, licenses, and futures.

And remember: under North Dakota law, drivers under 21 can face DUI consequences with ANY measurable amount of alcohol.

If someone is in danger because of alcohol or drugs, call 911. North Dakota’s Good Samaritan laws may protect you when you seek help and stay with the person.

Make the uncomfortable call.
Make the right choice.
Make it home safe.

Graduation week has arrived here in Grand Forks and, in an effort to keep our community safe, this week's posts will focus on celebrating responsibly.

Nobody wants a graduation celebration to turn into an ambulance ride, a funeral, or a criminal case.

Here’s something important a lot of people DON’T know:

In North Dakota, if you’re under 21 and call for help because someone is in danger from alcohol, the law may protect you from Minor in Possession or Minor Consumption charges IF:

✔️ You call 911 or get help
✔️ You stay with the person
✔️ You cooperate with first responders

The law exists for one reason: saving lives.

If your friend is unconscious, can’t wake up, is throwing up, struggling to breathe, or something feels seriously wrong — get help immediately.

Do NOT leave them alone because you’re scared of getting in trouble.

A real friend makes the call.

Good decisions in bad moments can save someone’s life.
