What should I photograph after an car accident? Answer:
After a car accident, photograph the whole scene—not just the dent. If you are safe and able, capture:
* The vehicles: Wide shots showing their positions, plus all sides of each vehicle and close-ups of damage.
* License plates: Every involved vehicle. For trucks, capture the company name, USDOT number, and identifying numbers on both the tractor and trailer.
* The roadway: Lane markings, intersections, traffic signs, and your direction of travel.
* Evidence on the ground: Tire marks, broken glass, debris, and fluid spills.
* Conditions: Weather, visibility, road surface, construction, and anything blocking a driver’s view.
* Your injuries: Visible cuts, bruises, and swelling. Take additional photos over the following days as they develop.
* Documents: The other driver’s insurance and license, if they cooperate. Keep these images private.
* Possible video sources: Nearby businesses, homes, or vehicles with cameras that may have recorded the crash.
Take wide, medium, and close-up photos. Keep the original files and back them up without editing them.
