The field of family law changes and evolves with societal changes. In the area of business and property, we now deal with enterprises no longer founded critically on real estate (land and buildings, or even manufactured products) but on ideas and services, cloud-based and highly technical companies that were unheard of a mere 5 or fewer years ago. Since we, as lawyers for the owners/operators of those businesses (or for the spouse of the owners/operators) have to learn about and find a method of valuing those businesses which takes into consideration the speed of change, of obsolescence, and the higher levels of risk and, therefore, uncertainty of profit or value. If a lawyer is unable to stay grounded in the basics of human nature, which are often very slow to change and often forgotten, and still move intellectually rapidly and deep enough to appreciate the light-speed with which enterprises must move and adapt, and avoid becoming obsolete in a matter of months, he/she is lost and of little value to you. So if you need a lawyer who understands and will guide you (when you are less rational and perceptive than usual due to the emotions of a fracturing marriage) on the human nature side of a matter, and yet keep pace with you on the business (income and property) side of the matter, chose wisely. This is not your father's or mother's (Oldsmobile) area of legal practice (the Oldsmobile, the Pontiac and the Desoto are no longer made but the Tesla, which was ridiculed just 5 years go, is the leading edge) chose your divorce lawyer wisely. Some intellects retain their agility and desire to learn and understand new concepts and complexities. Others do not. Bill
