Today marked a long but happy final legal chapter which was closed for a long-time client who got his life straightened out and sought to have his record cleaned up to start a new lease on life including having better prospects for employment. We had to file petitions to seal felony convictions in three different cases-one in Faulkner County and two in Saline County-seeking to seal a number of felony convictions. After a contested hearing in the last case the judge granted our petition to seal so that all three cases and their accompanying felony convictions have now been sealed.

This remedy falls under the broad heading of post-conviction relief where a clients have certain legal remedies which can be pursued following their convictions and sentences to get a new start and better their lives.

For the first time in my 40 years of practicing law I visited the Conway County Courthouse in Morrilton today presenting argument for a client on an early release from parole case in Circuit Court.

In Little Rock today for the third meeting of the Supreme Court of Arkansas Committee on Criminal Jury Instructions. A continuation of work by the Committee drafting instructions to cover changes in the criminal law as a result of the 2025 legislative session. ⚖️

Following college graduation this Spring, and after working full time with the legal team at the Public Service Commission this Summer, Trevor started UALR Law School as full time scholarship student this month, taking me back to my first year as a law student 43 years ago.

Lori and I attended Trevor’s First Year Law School Initiation Event today including visiting the library. When using books for legal research you always have to check the back pocket part (or sometimes you will find a stand alone supplement to the book) to make sure you are reading the most current law.

Post-conviction relief covers a broad array of things. Most recently, I have been handling cases for clients seeking to get their records sealed (the law changes constantly), to get their firearm rights restored, and for those currently on parole, to receive an early discharge of their parole for which I’m finding out that many in the criminal justice system are unaware that this law even exists.
