I’ve been loving being a business manager for Miss Middleboro, Taylor Durant!

Savannah has even been tagging along to the pageant events with me - how cute is her pageant jacket?!

Being widowed changes a lot more than relationship status.

It can also impact important legal and financial decisions that many people don’t realize need updating.

WATCH for what I recommend…

Estate planning isn’t just about preparing for the future, it’s about making sure your documents still reflect your life today.

Major life changes should always trigger a review of your estate plan.

One of the most common questions I get is:

“How long will probate take?”

The honest answer?

It depends.

In Massachusetts, probate timelines can vary based on many factors, including…

Whether the estate qualifies for informal or formal probate

How organized the documents are

Whether there are disputes between family members

Creditor timelines

Missing or outdated paperwork

Some estates move relatively smoothly, while others can take much longer than families expect.

And during that time, loved ones are often trying to navigate grief, financial responsibilities, and complicated paperwork all at once.

That’s one of the reasons thoughtful estate planning matters so much, it can help reduce delays, confusion, and stress for the people you care about most.

The goal isn’t just protecting assets.

It’s helping make a difficult time a little easier for your family.

On Mothers Day weekend I took my daughter to Tavern in the Square in Bellingham!

As many of you know, it just opened up in the Regal Cinema Plaza.

So we decided to have a mother daughter date night of dinner and Devil Wears Prada 2 (our favorite movie)!

Now, I had been to Tavern in the Square in other locations.

But I REALLY wanted to try the new one in Bellingham.

And like the rest - the location was perfect and the ambience was incredible.

For those who haven’t been - it's like an upscale pub with beautiful lighting and great seating.

As you guessed, there are a million TVs and a menu with a huge variety of options.

We had a reservation and were seated right away.

And I may be easy to please but they wowed me from the start with their distilled water served in the unique bottles, and it tasted SO fresh and clean.

Which sounds silly but I’m sure we have all been to plenty of restaurants with icky tasting water.

My daughter ordered the steak tips.

And I got the cornflake crusted chicken tenders and bang bang broccoli.

And we got a side serving of salmon.

I watched her devour them in about 5 minutes so needless to say they were GOOD.

She was raving about how tender they were.

My chicken tenders were also great and the cornflake crust gave it a more modern twist.

And the salmon was 10/10 delicious.

We left full, happy, and excited to be back.

The service was fast and attentive, the location is perfect for dinner and a movie, and it's nice to have a new staple restaurant in our backyards.

10/10 recommend

(I also 10/10 recommend the Devil Wears Prada 2 lol)

I had a meeting with an 18 year old two weeks ago.

She was getting ready to graduate from high school and was going off to college.

And unlike 99% of many 18 year olds, she was making an appointment to set up a healthcare proxy, HIPAA authorization form, and durable power of attorney for herself, because she had seen me on social media.

And it sparked some INCREDIBLE conversation about her future.

Which got me thinking…

Oftentimes - we overlook these young adults.

And of course in my own life, I have a 20 year old daughter, Emily, and I run the Distinguished Young Women program for 16-18 year olds, so I do really resonate with this age group and…

Sometimes even I don’t take them as seriously as I should!

And this incredible young woman was a reminder of that.

She read every word on her documents, asked really good questions about her wishes, what signing these documents meant, and her fears.

Heck - she was asking some questions that my very seasoned clients would not think to ask.

I was so inspired by the conversation that it prompted a conversation with my 20 year old daughter.

To my surprise, I thought I “knew” all of her wishes but it turns out she had some things to talk about.

I felt like I got to connect more with my daughter and understand her more - priceless.

I share this because next time you see an 18 year old (or if you have an 18 year old in your life)

Take them for coffee and truly LISTEN to them.

They know far more than we give them credit for.

I COMPLETELY understand the appeal of online estate planning templates…

They’re quick.

They’re cheap.

And they promise to make everything “easy.”

But here’s the problem: Massachusetts estate law isn’t one-size-fits-all.

I’ve seen DIY documents cause issues because:

Witness requirements weren’t properly followed

Beneficiaries were outdated

Trusts were never properly funded

Important protections were missing

Documents didn’t reflect Massachusetts-specific laws

And unfortunately, many families don’t discover these problems until there’s already a medical emergency or a loved one has passed away.

Estate planning isn’t just paperwork, it’s making sure your family is actually protected when it matters most.

Sometimes the “quick fix” can create much bigger problems later on.

One of the biggest estate planning myths I hear?

“I’m too young to need one.”

But if you have children, a home, savings, or people depending on you, having an estate plan in place can make an enormous difference for your family.

For many young families, a starter estate plan may include things like,

A Will

Guardianship wishes for children

Healthcare proxy documents

Durable power of attorney

Updated beneficiaries on life insurance and retirement accounts

Because estate planning isn’t just about wealth, it’s about protecting the people you love if life takes an unexpected turn.

And honestly?

Putting a plan in place now can save your family from making incredibly difficult decisions during an already emotional time.

You don’t need to “have everything figured out” to get started.

We are enjoying a wonderful start to Summer around here…

Emily is home from college and officially a RISING SENIOR at Holy Cross!

How the heck is that possible?!

Savannah, as always, has been living her BEST life and even got to march in the Bellingham Memorial Day Parade a few weeks ago.

She had a blast!

Then to get some bonding in, I brought the girls fishing and to Dave and Busters to enjoy the afternoon together.

I love having both my girls under one roof!

Blended families bring so much love together… 🥰

but they can also create estate planning situations that many families never see coming.

One of the most common mistakes I see?

Assuming “everything will automatically work itself out.”

In Massachusetts, outdated beneficiary designations, old Wills, and vague inheritance plans can unintentionally leave children, stepchildren, or even spouses unprotected.

I’ve seen situations where:

Assets accidentally went to an ex-spouse

Children were unintentionally left out

Families disagreed over “what mom or dad would have wanted”

Plans created years ago no longer reflect real-life relationships

Estate planning isn’t about choosing sides, it’s about creating clarity, protecting the people you love, and preventing unnecessary stress later on.

Life changes.

Families grow and evolve.

Your estate plan should too.
