The day your teen gets their license, your worry doesn’t end. It just moves to the passenger seat.

Next week is Teen Driver Safety Week! After more than a decade helping Georgia families through the worst days of their lives, I can tell you something hopeful: many of the crashes I’ve seen started with habits that one honest conversation could have changed.

Here are the 5 talks every parent should have before handing over the keys:

1️⃣ The phone stays down. Every drive.
2️⃣ Everyone buckles up, every seat, every trip.
3️⃣ Know Georgia’s passenger rules for new drivers.
4️⃣ Speed limits aren’t suggestions.
5️⃣ Never drive impaired, and never ride with someone who is.

These aren’t one-time lectures. They’re ongoing conversations, and your teen is watching how you drive, too.

I was 8 years old when I won my first case!😂

My third-grade library had a policy nobody told the students about. Some books were due in one week, others in two. I’d been caught off guard, so I stood up and made my case for a solid 10 minutes. I got extra time with my book, and the librarian told me, “You should be a lawyer.”

Some people pick a career. Some careers pick you in an elementary school library. Today, I work to speak up for people who are injured by rule breakers! 💙💛

In ninth grade, I sat in a classroom at Southwest DeKalb and watched real attorneys teach us how to stand up and speak for someone else.🗣️
I never forgot them. Years later, I came back to do the same for a new group of students. Some of those students will be the lawyers, prosecutors, and judges our community depends on. That’s worth every Saturday practice. 💙💛

Today was a special day!

I’ve stood in a lot of courtrooms and before a lot of judges, but today meant more than most.

When you coach young people, you never know which ones will demonstrate real skill, intellect and determination as life progesses. Diamond Daniels did! She went from the Southwest DeKalb High School mock trial team to a sworn member of the State Bar of Georgia.

Diamond, I can barely express how proud we all are of you, and I can’t wait to see all that you will accomplish next. Congratulations, Counselor. ⚖️

But some deadlines are much shorter. If a city, county, or state vehicle or property was involved, notice may be due in as little as 6 months.

The insurance company won't remind you. Missing a deadline can mean losing your case for good.

Having the "right of way" won't protect you from a 4,000-pound car.

After more than a deacde of representing injured people and grieving families across Georgia, I've learned that Atlanta's roads don't care where you're from or why you're here.

Everyone who comes through Atlanta, whether you're visiting for a game, a concert, or just passing through from South Carolina and traveling to Florida, ends up in some kind of traffic. That's simply how our city works. But if you're used to small-town or rural roads, urban driving can catch you off guard. People in the city drive differently, and our roadways can be tricky to navigate.
Pedestrians face real risks too. When Messi came to town, we saw crowds fill the streets and stop traffic. Big events are part of what makes Atlanta special, but they also put more people on foot near moving cars.

Please remember that even when the law gives you the right of way, your body is no match for a two-ton vehicle. Look up, make eye contact with drivers, and wait that extra second before you step off the curb.
