In one of the recordings presented in court, an elderly woman explained why she had signed over half her home to her eldest son. She was afraid, she said, of what life would be like if she refused; they lived under the same roof, after all.

She later drew up a will to protect what remained. After she passed, that will was challenged anyway.

A will records what you want to happen. But it rarely explains why, and in family disputes, the why often matters just as much. A letter of wishes fills that gap. It gives voice to the reasons behind your decisions, leaving less room for others to rewrite the story.

Estate planning can’t prevent every family conflict. But it can make your intentions harder to ignore and give the people you love something clearer to stand on.

No one knew who, if anyone, would ever find it.

Yet when people were asked to decide what should represent life on Earth, they did not choose the things that made us wealthy. They chose the things that made us human.

There’s something worth thinking about in that.
