The last 11 days was the only time in 2024 I was not posting regularly on social media.

I am grateful for the break.

The entire family of 12 gathered from California and Australia in Singapore to go on a great family trip to Sri Lanka.

We had never done this before. We were apprehensive initially. But we had a blast.

The commonality was family.

I will sum up 2024 as this - focussing on self and family.

I did it every day in 2024.

It may seem self centered, perhaps even lazy, taking the feet from the fast moving escalator of career and professional growth.

I needed the realignment to self and family in 2024.

When you are focussing out on the outside world, it is not necessarily healthy or positive.

You need to run your own race, not the race others are running.

Focussing within and on what matters to you is real self growth.

I was in equilibrium, happy and contented.

Not every day, of course. On the days I wasn't, I made the choice to accept how I feel, be kind to myself, giving myself time to embrace my thoughts and feelings to heal.

Importantly, I learn, or am still learning gratitude.

I leaned on trusted friends when I needed the support and strength to keep going.

Hope. Faith. Love.

For that, 2024 was a good year.

In 2005, I first stepped into the world of Alternate Dispute Resolution by attending the mediation training conducted by the Singapore Mediation Centre. I passed the rigid assessment and became its Associate Mediator.

I was privileged to then become a Court Volunteer Mediator in the then State Courts and Family Justice Courts.

Little did I know my classmate, Dr Peter Loke and our mediation coach, property developer, Yong Eng Wah and I will then come together to start one of the first private mediation company in Singapore, Resolvers Pte Ltd in 2012.

I then started doing private mediation for commercial and family cases.

Why did I pick up mediation then when it was not popular with lawyers?

I believe in peacemaking. I strongly believe that disputes should be mediated first.

This strong belief I had in 2005 then became a common feature in the Singapore Courts, especially the Family Justice Courts.

Dreams may take time, and often a long time to turn into fruition as we have seen with our immediate neighbouring country.

The important thing is not to give up on our dreams and keep on dreaming.

Looking forward to more private mediation with my multi disciplinary Principal Mediators in Resolvers.

Pre-Action Mediation (PAM):

Thank you, Ministry of Social and Family Development, Singapore (MSF) for introducing PAM to help couples to attempt mediation before stepping into the Family Court.

Every couple who consult me want a peaceful divorce or uncontested divorce.

But it is difficult to achieve that by themselves or even with the help of lawyers.

Why?

Because of the emotions experienced by the couple when the marriage breaks down.

When they have managed the emotions and want to work together to achieve an uncontested divorce, all it took was 2 hours of mediation to do so.

So, how can estranged couples manage their emotions to achieve a peaceful divorce.

The couple having a civil conversation with each other?

OR

The couple speaking to a counsellor?

OR

The couple speaking to a lawyer to negotiate a settlement?

It is a combination of all 3 and the skills of the lawyers.

What is private mediation?

It is a mediation process which you can attempt to solve a legal problem without going to Court?

Is it meditation?

No! You can meditate but you cannot solve the legal problem.

Who is a mediator?

He is an independent neutral person who sits with the disputants and helps to settle the problem.

Does the mediator orders the terms of the settlement?

No, he is not a judge. He facilitates a settlement.

Why do we, a group of professionals, want to mediate a legal problem?

We are peacemakers. We empower disputants to solve their problems without going to Court. We value win win solutions.

Who are we?

Ask us and we will be happy to share with you.

Who do we want to help?

Peoe who arw willing to give and take, value relationships more and want to settle their problems without going to Court.

Mindful lawyering:

I am a family lawyer who does out of court settlements as well as litigation.

Often, it is the other spouse who is contentious and I respond on behalf of my clients.

I do enjoy litigation. Not the type who engage in acrimonious correspondence and speak the loudest and files every Court application in the Rule Book.

You can be a Court lawyer without all of that.

I do Mindful Litigation.

What is that?

I understand my client's goals. I advise him what he can get, prospects of success and if it is important to him, I will give my best shot. I advise him to look at the big picture and not sweat over small stuff.

At the end of the day, what is important to them is important to me.

They want to end the pain quickly with less stress.

They want to start a new chapter in their lives.

They want to spend less energy, time and money in litigation.

It is the job of a lawyer to help the client to achieve that goal.

I want to be such a lawyer.

That is my life mission.

Peter Loke, Yong Eng Wah and I met first at the Singapore Mediation Centre. At an event organised by the Singapore Mediation Centre, Peter grabbed me.

"Hey, shall we form a private mediation company", he asked.

I was thinking of just that and was looking at friends to venture with.

"Let us invite Eng Wah along, he suggested.

I agreed.

That was the story of the birth of Resolvers Pte Ltd in 2012, probably the first private mediation in Singapore.

The strength of Resolvers is not that Peter is a medical doctor, Eng Wah is a property developer and I am a family lawyer.

It is our strong friendship and the care for each other.

After 9 years, we are good friends and good business partners.
