Yesterday, the UK government announced that its new Social Housing Bill will be returning to Parliament for its second reading. This new housing law will allow landlords to evict domestic abusers. This marks a significant change to the current law and provides legal protection for domestic abuse victims regarding their homes.

One of the biggest issues facing domestic abuse victims is that they often live with their abusers. It is common for victims to feel helpless to change their situation when their home is not a safe space. Not only do they lack basic peace and safety in their home, it also legally ties them to their abuser.

Under the new legislation, a perpetrator cannot end a joint tenancy as long as there are court proceedings. And, landlords will be able to evict the perpetrators while allowing the victim to stay.

This case was hyped as a Battle of the Titans. A fight between the richest people in the world over lucrative AI technology and how it may be used. However, the case was unanimously decided based on procedure because Elon Musk missed the deadline to file. While this may seem like a letdown compared to the passionate discourse surrounding the case, procedure is critically important in litigation. And, it is one aspect that people easily forget.

One key reason why lawyers exist is because procedure is complex. Bringing a case to court is about more than the merits. You have to file the correct forms, the correct documents, and do so on time. With numerous laws and court regulations, this is difficult for non-lawyers to navigate without assistance and while continuing with their own jobs.
