Hi, as I said the other day in an earlier post, I get asked a lot at the moment by business owners (particularly in restaurants) about hiring people from the EU and around the world. I've worked for 18 years witi businesses and migrants as a lawyer so have a real understanding from both sides.

It's becoming increasingly complicated and if you as a business get it wrong you get get a huge fine (£20,000 per person sometimes). So, to help people, I've created a 6 step method to help people understand how to manage it better.

S - System
E - Evaluate
C - Collate
U - Understand
R - Reject, or
E - Employ and Engage

To help explain this more, I'm doing a free online class this Wednesday at 1800 London time. It'll last about an hour and will explain a check list I'm giving away to help you do this.

I've also shot a very quick video to explain more.

I've been asked quite a few times this year about small businesses and larger business who hire 'foreign workers'. I don't like this term much but it is the term used by the government/

People seem unsure of who they need to check, what documents to check, what questions they can ask and what documents they need to keep. To that end, I'm running a free webinar to explain more.

I'll put a link in this post when it's ready to go.

Hi and welcome to my page.

I've been a practising barrister for 18 years.

I started out representing defendants in criminal trials and almost immediately starting representing migrants and asylum seekers.

I met some extraordinary people over many years from many countries who had gone through incredible hardship. And I'm proud to see some of my migrant clients flourish in the UK and be real success stories.

I also have been working with many businesses for years too.

I have always believed that small businesses are the engine room of an economy and successful businesses generate jobs and give people esteem.

However, I also believe in caring capitalism. It has the power to do great things but also, unfettered and un-regulated, has the power to suck wealth from the disadvantaged and transfer it to elites. Just thinking of the banking crises of 2008 onward.

I've always strongly believed in human rights and human dignity - but do not believe that is incompatible with supporting businesses create wealth and give productive and rewarding work to people and empower them.

That's what SHL is about - helping businesses work on the 4 key ingredients that make a business successful as well as helping individuals treated badly by their employers, businesses that should know better or out immigration system.
