CCJB advances locally led climate action in Bangladesh

On 22 July 2026, the Centre for Climate Justice – Bangladesh (CCJB) , in partnership with HEKS/EPER Bangladesh and the CALL programme, organised the National Policy Dialogue on Equitable Climate Finance for Locally Led Climate Action in Dhaka, with support from the Embassy of Switzerland in Bangladesh.

Our Founder Director, M Hafijul Islam Khan – Climate Negotiator and L&D Coordinator for LDCs at UNFCCC – presented key policy recommendations calling for:

Transparent and equitable climate finance
Better access for local communities
Stronger accountability in climate budgets
Institutional support for locally led solutions

The dialogue featured distinguished guests including Dr. Saimum Parvez (Special Assistant to the Prime Minister), Mr. Diepak Elmer (Chargé d'Affaires, Embassy of Switzerland), and senior government officials.

The message was loud and clear: climate finance must reach those who need it most – our frontline communities.

"The time for charity is passed. It is the time for legal accountability." The Director of Centre for Climate Justice - Bangladesh has called for endorsement of the Advisory Opinion (AO) of the International Court of Justice (ICJ) regarding Obligations of States in respect of Climate Change along with a guideline to be developed to ensure proper implementation of the AO. Also he focused on the need to ensure adequate climate finance not as a loan but as a grant for the climate vulnerable countries. He was delivering his speech at the Annual Panel Discussion of the 62nd Session of the United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC).
