I am not interested in pretending everything is equal when the numbers say otherwise.
Wichita’s overall owner-occupied rate is 58.9%. But when you break it down by race, the gap is real. So yes, we should celebrate homeownership. But we should also fight for fairness in who gets to reach it, keep it, and pass it on.

That is what Fair Housing Month should push us to talk about.
What would it take to close the gap in Wichita?

Wichita’s overall owner-occupied rate comes from Census QuickFacts, and the racial breakdown comes from KHI’s ACS-based city analysis.

This is where real estate professionals need backbone.
Fair housing is not just something to mention in April.
It is a daily standard. It shows up in how we market homes. How we describe neighborhoods. How we answer questions. How seriously we take equal access.
If we are not willing to confront bias, then we are not really upholding professional standards.

What should ethical real estate leadership sound like right now?

This fits NAR’s Fair Housing Month message about accountability, culture change, training, and advancing homeownership.

Let me put real numbers on it:
In Wichita, Black households rent at the highest rate in the city: 61.8%.
That matters because renters are often working hard just to stay afloat while owners have a better chance to build equity over time.
This is why housing conversations cannot stop at “just work harder.”
We have to ask who got access, who got excluded, and who is still paying for it.
What barriers to ownership do you see families facing most right now?

That 61.8% of renter figure is from the Wichita ACS-based KHI analysis.

Everybody loves to talk about personal responsibility.
Fine.
But let’s also talk about public responsibility.
If systems were built in ways that favored some families and blocked others, then we should not be surprised when the results are still uneven decades later. Everybody deserves a fair shot at homeownership. Not just the people history already helped.

What does a “fair shot” actually look like in practice?🤔

National and local research both support that redlining’s effects were long-lasting. KHI’s Wichita housing brief directly says lasting impacts of segregation and redlining created inequitable opportunities for homeownership.
