National Pastor’s Spouse Day is personal for us, so we’re celebrating it a week early. It’s September 6th, but we want to take the whole week to do it.

Kurt is the husband of Rev. Cheri Holdridge, a United Methodist minister who has served Christ Church United Methodist Church in Findlay, Central United Methodist Church in Toledo, and The Village Church in Toledo.

That means Kurt knows firsthand that being a pastor's spouse sometimes involves changed dinner plans, unexpected phone calls, busy weekends, and learning that "day off" can be a surprisingly flexible concept.

But it also means becoming part of wonderful church families and watching firsthand what can happen when people come together to care for one another.

Today, we celebrate all the spouses who stand beside those called to ministry—and Kurt sends a special thank you to Cheri for her years of service to our communities.

Happy National Pastor’s Spouse Day!

You agreed on a workers' compensation settlement amount. Are you done?

Not even close!

In Part 4 and the finale of our Ohio Workers' Compensation Settlement Series, Attorney Kurt M. Young explains what actually happens when you try to settle a claim.

We cover:

✔ Why the injured worker usually has to make the first demand
✔ How settlement negotiations work
✔ Why the first number can set the "ceiling" for negotiations
✔ What happens once everyone agrees on a dollar amount
✔ Why the exact language in the settlement agreement matters
✔ Who has to sign and approve the settlement
✔ The difference between State Fund and Self-Insured claims
✔ Why there's still a 30-day period before the settlement becomes final

As Kurt puts it: Once everyone agrees down to the penny, the lawyers still have to agree on the commas and periods

And until the process is finished, the settlement isn't final.

This video wraps up our four-part series looking at settlement from the perspectives of the injured worker, the employer, the BWC or Industrial Commission—and finally, how all those pieces come together.

Happy National Presidential Joke Day!

Even Presidents have been known for their sense of humor—and today is a great reminder that sometimes a good laugh is exactly what we need, even when you are dealing with difficult subjects like we don.

In fact Kurt loves to collect lawyer jokes, for instance his spin on a classic:

What is the difference between a good lawyer and a great lawyer? A good lawyer knows the law, a great lawyer knows the judge, the best lawyer knows what the judge thinks the law is.

We hope your day includes plenty of smiles!

Who decides if your Ohio workers' compensation settlement gets approved?

Many injured workers believe that if they and their employer agree on a settlement, the deal is done. Not quite.

In Part 3 of our settlement series, Attorney Kurt M. Young explains why the Ohio Bureau of Workers' Compensation (BWC) or the Industrial Commission (IC) also plays an important role in the process.

In this video, you'll learn:
The difference between State Fund and Self-Insured employers
Why BWC approval is required for most Ohio claims
How the Industrial Commission handles Self-Insured settlements
Why reviewing your medical records and benefits before negotiating is so important
Why every settlement should be based on your future—not just today's offer

Knowledge is one of the best tools you have when making decisions about your workers' compensation claim.

Watch Part 3 today, and join us for Part 4, where we'll walk through the settlement process from beginning to end.

Your back works hard every day—take care of it!

Whether you're lifting boxes, patients, tools, or materials, using proper lifting techniques can help prevent painful back injuries.

✔ Lift with your legs.
✔ Keep the load close.
✔ Don't twist.
✔ Ask for help when you need it.

Stay safe, Ohio!

Back injuries are among the most common workplace injuries in Ohio—and they don't just happen on construction sites. Warehouse employees, factory workers, nurses, delivery drivers, mechanics,...

Each year on July 28th, we celebrate National Buffalo Soldiers Day, honoring the brave African American soldiers who served in the United States Army following the Civil War.

Established by Congress in 1992, the day commemorates the creation of the first peacetime all-Black Army regiments in 1866. These soldiers served with distinction on the western frontier, protecting settlers, building roads, escorting mail, and serving in numerous military campaigns despite facing prejudice and discrimination. Their courage, professionalism, and commitment to service earned them the enduring nickname "Buffalo Soldiers," a name believed to have been given to them by Native American tribes in recognition of their strength, resilience, and determination.

Their legacy continues today, not only through our nation's military history, but also through organizations dedicated to preserving that history and serving their communities.

Here in Northwest Ohio, we're fortunate to have the “Buffalo Soldiers Motorcycle Club”, whose members are committed to honoring the legacy of the original Buffalo Soldiers through community service, education, mentorship, and charitable work throughout our region.

We're especially proud to recognize Earl Mack, one of the club's leaders and a valued client and friend of our firm. Earl has long been dedicated to serving our community, preserving history, and helping others through his leadership and volunteer efforts. His commitment to service reflects the same spirit of integrity, perseverance, and community that the original Buffalo Soldiers exemplified.

At The Law Offices of Kurt M. Young, LLC, we believe that service comes in many forms, whether it's serving your country, your community, or standing beside injured Ohio workers when they need someone in their corner.

Today, we honor the legacy of the Buffalo Soldiers, celebrate those who continue that tradition of service, and thank leaders like Earl Mack for making Northwest Ohio a stronger community.

Happy National Buffalo Soldiers Day!

🤔 **Why would your employer want to settle your workers' compensation claim?**

Most injured workers think settlement is all about what *they* want.

But there are actually **three parties** that have to agree before a settlement happens:
✅ You
✅ Your employer
✅ The Ohio Bureau of Workers' Compensation or Industrial Commission

In Part 2 of our settlement series, Attorney Kurt M. Young explains:
✔️ Why employers sometimes want to settle claims
✔️ How workers' compensation premiums affect employers
✔️ What reserve pools are (without putting you to sleep!)
✔️ Why some employers ask employees to resign
✔️ What confidentiality clauses and legal releases really mean

Understanding the employer's side of the negotiation can help you understand why settlement offers happen—and why some never do.

Watch Part 2 today, and don't miss Part 3, where we'll explain the role of the Ohio Bureau of Workers' Compensation and the Industrial Commission.
