Then everything gets divided equally, because that's what the document said.
Money matters. But what she wants most is for somebody to say out loud that it happened.
Set aside an amount and say why. Pay her along the way. Or simply write her a letter. Any one of those beats silence.

Naming all three kids as successor trustees feels like the fairest choice. Here's what almost nobody decides: how the three of them make a decision together.

In some states, two can outvote the third. In others, all three have to agree, and one holdout can stall the house until a judge breaks the tie.

Your trust can settle it. Majority rules, everyone agrees, or one of them breaks the tie.

Decide it now, put it in writing, and tell all three why.

You've done the big paperwork. The families who have it easiest after a parent dies also kept one more page, and it has nothing legal on it.

Which bank. Which insurance company. Who the doctor is. Where your documents are kept and who else has a key. Whether there's a safe and who knows the combination.

Write it by hand and date it. Then tell one person where it is.

In nearly every state, a divorce automatically revokes anything your will leaves to your ex. In at least 26 states it reaches your other accounts too.

A 401(k) or company pension through work is the exception, in every state. Federal law controls it, and it pays whoever is still named on the form.

Log in and read the beneficiary page. It takes two minutes.

Send this to anybody who has been divorced.

You lent your son money in 2011. He paid some of it back. Nobody wrote any of it down.

Years later, your daughter remembers one number and your son remembers a different one, and they are both being honest.

Four minutes with a pen ends that argument. Write the amount, write what has been repaid, and say whether the rest is a loan or an early share.

Putting all three kids on a beneficiary deed keeps the house out of probate. That part works.

Then all three of them own one house together. One wants to stay. One needs the money. One lives in Ohio and doesn't call back.

Selling takes all three signatures, and if they can't agree, one of them can ask a judge to force a sale.

A living trust lets one person sell the house the way you asked, and each child gets a check.

Send this to the one who'll be in charge.

Wealthy families keep their savings in a trust instead of their own name. The reason is an FDIC rule most people have never heard of.

In your name alone, with no beneficiaries named, your savings are insured up to $250,000 per bank.

In a living trust with five beneficiaries named, it's up to $1,250,000 per owner at that same bank. A married couple can reach $2.5 million.

Same bank. Same money. Look at the name at the top of your statement tonight.

Asked at two in the morning by somebody who has already been through three drawers.

You probably have everything. The only thing missing is that one other person knows where it lives.

Take a photo of the outside of the folder and text it to them tonight. They do not need to see inside. They need to know the drawer.

Money matters. For a lot of families it is the difference between a comfortable retirement and a worried one.

But the money turns out to be the easy part, because the money has a number on it. These five stay open.
