A University of Tennessee student recently sued a dating app over the use of her TikTok video. The dating app, Meete, allegedly used the student’s video in an advertisement without her permission. Her lawsuit claims use of the video violates her right of publicity and constitutes misleading advertising in violation of the Lanham Act.
This lawsuit highlights a growing issue for brands, influencers, and digital platforms: consent matters. When content is used commercially, right of publicity, false endorsement, and identity rights can quickly become part of the legal conversation.
