Skate San Diego ran for over a decade before it closed a few years back.

Escondido picked up the slack. Two sheets. Local leagues. NARCH too, one of the biggest roller hockey tournaments in the world.

"30,000 is it unless you have underinsured motorist coverage."

That's California's minimum. If your injuries cost more than $30K, that's the whole payout. Unless you added your own protection first.

"How come we don't have a tournament here?"

That's the question Vinny Cericola put straight to Grecia at the Kroc Center Ice, allegedly the best rink in town and conveniently five minutes from his house. 🏒

He'd already clocked who filled that rink. Roller players who made the switch to ice. Kids who grew up through the local youth system. Transplants from Canada and back east. Military skaters who picked up the game somewhere else entirely.

Men's league. Open hockey. That was the ceiling.

Zero large tournaments at a rink full of people ready for one. That question became the San Diego Ice Mixer.

One question most drivers never think to ask their broker: do I have uninsured motorist coverage?

Liability insurance protects the other driver if you cause a crash. It does nothing for you if they hit you and have nothing to pay with.

UM/UIM coverage is the piece that protects you. Worth a call to your broker before you ever need it.

Already dealing with an uninsured driver? Get the name, license plate, registration, driver's license. The more you document, the more options you have later.

Exchange driver's license and insurance information with the other driver. That exchange is the foundation of everything that follows.

Then pull out your phone. Document every square inch of the scene, not just the damage. Talk to anyone standing nearby and get their names before they walk off.

Here's the part that catches people off guard: police often don't show up. No officer, no report, no neutral party writing down what happened. You end up recreating the whole scene yourself, with your own evidence.

And if you're the one at fault, don't try to drive off or play dumb. It catches up with you every time, and it makes you look worse than just owning it would have. 📸🪪

"I was just driving, on my way out here, messaging and posting, saying, hey, I'm looking to skate." 🏒

That's how Vinny Cericola found his people.

No app. No algorithm matching him to a team. Just a Facebook post from a highway rest stop, and strangers who wrote back.

One group skated Tuesday nights. Another skated Thursdays. Then somebody asked him to play for their team, and just like that, he wasn't new anymore. He was in.

That's the thing about hockey nobody puts in the recruiting pitch. You show up breathing hard, fighting for a puck next to people who need you to be there. No one wins alone. No one loses alone either.

Vinny and Eddy Rojas built the San Diego Ice Mixer on that same idea: show up, and you're part of something.

Most people think calling the police after a minor fender bender is overkill.

It's not. It's the single smartest thing you can do.

Here's the moment that matters: months later, in a deposition, an insurance defense attorney asks, "did you even call the police?" You want to say yes. Even if they never showed up.

If no officer arrives, you become the record keeper. Video the scene, both vehicles, inside and out. Get the other driver's license and insurance info. If someone saw it happen, get their name and number before they walk away.

Do that, and you're locked down. Good to go. 📱✅

Five dollars. That's the gap between Eddy's first hockey stick and his second, a twelve dollar Mylec traded up to a seventeen dollar one.

Back then the puck was orange and took a beating like a chew toy for a dog.

Somewhere along the way, sticks got hollow shafts and price tags nobody saw coming. The kids on the ice never changed. Just what their parents handed over to get them there.
