Attorneys Jorge Mares and Sommer Hazel recently secured a $1,750,000 settlement on behalf of a client in a trucking collision case.

Our client’s life was forever altered when a dump truck hauling heavy materials for a highway construction project failed to maintain a safe following distance and crashed into the rear of her vehicle. Despite operating a fully loaded commercial vehicle on heavily trafficked roads, the defendants failed to account for the increased stopping distance and safety risks associated with the load they were carrying.

The defense attempted to shift blame by arguing that our client’s injuries were merely age-related. Through dedicated advocacy and relentless work, our team was able to rebut their arguments, and achieved a meaningful result for the client.

Results matter, especially when defendants attempt to minimize the real-life impact of catastrophic injuries. We are proud to have helped secure a recovery that will support our client’s healing and future. Great job to everyone involved.

Attorneys Shalimar Wallis and Oscar Quiroz, along with their team, secured an $8,500,000 settlement on behalf of a family whose lives were forever changed when a negligent tractor-trailer driver crossed into their lane.

The defendant, a driver of the commercial truck, was talking on his cell phone when his tire had a blowout. The driver failed to respond as he was trained, causing a devastating collision with our clients’ vehicle. The clients endured over a dozen surgeries, a traumatic brain injury, a cervical fusion, and permanent disabilities that have altered their lives forever.

Through a thorough investigation, our team uncovered a disturbing pattern of falsified driver logs, Hours of Service violations, and a complete failure to supervise and train its driver. Armed with critical ECM data, deposition testimony, a powerful fleet expert, and a tire that suffered a severe manufacturing defect, Shalimar, Oscar, and their team built an overwhelming case that left the defense with no option but to settle with our client.

Join us in congratulating Elleni Carrillo on her well-deserved promotion to Associate Attorney!

A proud South Texas native, Elleni’s journey in law is rooted in her upbringing in a rural ranching community and a family legacy of legal service. She earned both her Bachelor of Arts in Political Science and Master of Arts in Public Administration from Texas A&M University–Corpus Christi, before going on to receive her Juris Doctor from St. Mary’s University School of Law.

Elleni’s passion for advocacy is reflected through her work with Court Appointed Special Advocate (CASA) for the Coastal Bend, where she supported children in the foster care system. She further strengthened her commitment to service through volunteer efforts during the South Texas freeze of 2021 and her continued work with nonprofit organizations.

She brings valuable experience from five years as a paralegal at Carrillo Law Office and her time clerking for the Honorable Baldemar Garza, gaining meaningful insight into the legal process.

Elleni combines resilience, compassion, and determination to advocate for those facing adversity.

During the 89th Texas legislature, A bill authored under Texas Senator Charles Schwertner, SB 30, otherwise known as the “Trucking Bill” was introduced as a major tort reform bill aimed to reduce excessive jury awards referred to as “nuclear verdicts” in civil lawsuits that result in medical or injury damages.

SB 30 proved to be the largest, most aggressive yet most controversial bill they have ever introduced to the Legislature in over 3 decades. Had it passed, it would’ve sent shockwaves to the legal and business communities alike.
