One of the many benefits of apartment living is the expectation that maintenance issues will be handled promptly. But what happens when those promises are ignored?

Our clients had just moved into a brand-new apartment complex when a leak from the unit above began. Despite repeated opportunities to investigate, maintenance failed to address the issue or inspect for water damage. Over time, our clients began experiencing a range of unexplained serious health problems.

A second leak revealed toxic black mold growing inside the wall cavity behind her kitchen sink. Recognizing the danger of black mold, our clients immediately had the apartment tested for mold. Multiple species of toxic mold were found in the air, inside the HVAC system, and throughout the wall cavities. They were forced to abandon the apartment and nearly all of their belongings.

That’s when they called Jennifer A. Neal, Attorney at Law. Alongside Travis Headley, Julie Matsen, and their team, Jennifer fought to hold the responsible parties accountable. Through their efforts, the property management companies, the owner, and the plumbing contractor responsible for installing the plumbing were brought to the table, and our team secured justice for our clients with a $625,000 settlement.

We're officially halfway through the summer, and our Class of Summer 2026 has already packed a lot into their time at Guerra LLP. From attending trials and hearings to assisting with meaningful litigation work and learning firsthand what it takes to advocate for clients, our law clerks have embraced every opportunity that has come their way.

With everyone spread across courtrooms, depositions, case work, and summer activities, getting the entire class together for one photo proved to be quite the challenge! This picture may not capture every member of our Summer 2026 class, but it does capture the energy, dedication, and camaraderie that make our Grasshopper Program so special.

We're proud of all they have accomplished so far and can't wait to see what the rest of the summer holds.

Last week, our attorney, Lance Kimbro, got on the stage at the Texas Trial Lawyers Association Mid-Year conference and delivered a presentation on "The Golden Rule at Trial".

During his presentation, Lance shared insights on jury selection, strategies for effectively utilizing the Golden Rule, and the role of reptile theory in trial advocacy.

Attorneys Jorge Mares and Sommer Hazel recently secured a $1,750,000 settlement on behalf of a client in a trucking collision case.

Our client’s life was forever altered when a dump truck hauling heavy materials for a highway construction project failed to maintain a safe following distance and crashed into the rear of her vehicle. Despite operating a fully loaded commercial vehicle on heavily trafficked roads, the defendants failed to account for the increased stopping distance and safety risks associated with the load they were carrying.

The defense attempted to shift blame by arguing that our client’s injuries were merely age-related. Through dedicated advocacy and relentless work, our team was able to rebut their arguments, and achieved a meaningful result for the client.
