Growth usually comes with paperwork.
Protection comes with awareness.
Because at a certain point, it's not about getting booked anymore.
It's about what getting booked costs you.

Your name.
Your content.
Your recordings.
Your long-term leverage.
All shaped by clauses most people skim.
We're breaking down:
Ownership clauses
Licensing rights
Usage and distribution terms
The language that decides whether your work stays yours or becomes someone else's asset after the event.
Because contracts are not paperwork.
They are structure.
And structure determines control.
Hope to see you there!

In many industries, leadership is still seen as something reserved for a select few.
When Black women step into these spaces, we are constantly asked to prove ourselves, often in ways that others aren't.
Our decisions are questioned, our authority undermined, and our leadership treated like an afterthought.
But leadership is not about asking for permissionโ€”it's about being trusted.
Trusted to make the right choices, trusted to lead a team, trusted to carry responsibility.
Yet, too often, Black women in leadership are met with microaggressions, dismissed ideas, and decisions that others would never have to defend.
It's time we stop questioning Black women in leadership.
It's time we stop undermining their authority.
It's time we stop protecting discomfort over respect.
Black women are expected to carry the weight of leadership, but without the respect that should come with it.
We lead with precision, grace, and determination, but often we're denied the trust and validation needed to truly lead.
It's time the world recognizes the power and value we bring.
We are more than capable, and our leadership deserves the same level of respect as anyone else in the room.
No more shrinking, no more doubting.
It's time for our authority to be embracedโ€”not just tolerated.

She was told she didn't belong.
Too emotional.
Too ambitious.
Too โ€œdifferent.โ€
At 9, she faced pain no child should.
At 14, she lost a child.
At 19, she lost her first job.
At 23, she almost lost faith in herself.
But she didn't stop there.
She kept speakingโ€”when no one was listening.
She kept showing upโ€”when no one was clapping.
She kept believingโ€”when no one else did.
And that belief?
It built an empire.
It built a legacy.
It built Oprah.
โ†’ From rejection to recognition.
โ†’ From โ€œnot fit for TVโ€ to the most influential woman in media.
Her story reminds us:
Your pain is not your ending.
It's your preparation.
Keep building.
Keep believing.
Because one day, someone will call what broke youโ€”your breakthrough.

Most people focus on the opportunity
Very few focus on the clause inside it
The one that decides:
Who owns the recording
Who controls distribution
Who benefits after you leave the stage
We're getting specific on the clauses that impact your control
Because getting on stage is one thing
Keeping ownership is another
Hope to see you there!

Let's start this Monday with a Doechii moment โ€” proof that even a setback can spark the biggest comeback.
She got fired from her day job.
A year later, she signed with Top Dawg Entertainment.
In 2025, she became a Grammy winner.
And her name?
Not just a stage persona.
It's a registered trademark.
But here's the real question: Who owns the trademark?
Because according to USPTO records, it's not Doechii.
It's Top Dawg Entertainment.
And this isn't about whether she got a good deal or not โ€” this is about what it means to build a brand but not own the name.
Let's compare:
โ†’ Jay-Z owns his name โ€” and in 2020, he transferred the trademark to one of his own LLCs. Long game.
โ†’ Beyoncรฉ trademarks everything โ€” her name, her daughter's name, โ€œBeychella,โ€ and entire eras of her career. Legacy, locked.
โ†’ Kendrick Lamar left TDE in 2021 and shortly after, filed for a trademark of his own name, under his ownership. Clean break, clear control.
So where does that leave emerging artists โ€” and founders, coaches, speakers, and thought leaders like us?
With this lesson: Success without ownership is a shaky victory.
If you're building a name that means something to your audience, your clients, or your communityโ€ฆ
โ†’ You need to protect it.
โ†’ You need to control it.
โ†’ You need to own it.
Because one day, your name might carry weight.
The only question is โ€” will it be yours to carry?

The USPTO doesn't care how famous you are.
First to file wins.
Nike filed a trademark application for Bronny James' "B9" logo in February 2026.
Built a shoe around it. Put it on the heel. Released it to the public.
The USPTO denied the application two months later.
Not because the logo wasn't distinctive.
Because a small golf apparel company in Austin, Texas called Back9 had already been there.
They started using their "B9" mark in 2020.
Filed in 2021.
Registered in 2022.
Four years before Nike showed up.
The examining attorney's conclusion was direct: the marks are similar in appearance, sound, and commercial impression.
Phonetic equivalents. That's enough.
It doesn't matter that Bronny James plays basketball and Back9 sells golf apparel.
Back9's registration doesn't limit itself to golf channels โ€” which means the USPTO automatically presumes the goods overlap.
Nike has three months to appeal, modify the logo, or negotiate a consent agreement with a company that now holds significant leverage over one of the most powerful brands in the world.
The clearance search happens before the shoe. Not after.
