⚠️ SCAM ALERT FOR NORTH CAROLINA

The North Carolina Department of Justice is warning about a new scam targeting domestic violence victims.

Scammers are impersonating law enforcement officers or court officials and may use information from court records to make their calls sound legitimate.

They then demand money related to the domestic violence case.

They may claim payment is needed for things like:
• A domestic violence protective order
• Bond for an alleged abuser
• Electronic monitoring
• Preventing someone’s release from custody
• Having criminal charges dismissed

Do not send money.
If you receive a suspicious call:
• Hang up.
• Do not provide payment or financial information.
• Verify the call directly with the court or law enforcement agency using a trusted phone number.
• Reach out to a local domestic violence resource if you need support.

The North Carolina Department of Justice also provides consumer assistance for people who believe they may have been targeted by a scam.

Please share this warning. Someone in your community may need to see it.

MYTH vs. FACT: Does your spouse have to agree before you can get divorced in North Carolina?

❌ MYTH: Both spouses have to agree to the divorce.

✅ FACT: Generally, no. North Carolina is a no-fault divorce state.

Spouses generally must live separate and apart for at least one year and one day before filing for absolute divorce.

It’s also important to know that divorce itself does not automatically resolve issues such as child custody, child support, alimony, or property division.

Second Saturday is designed to help individuals better understand the emotional, financial, and legal sides of divorce before making major decisions.

Can you change your child’s last name after divorce in North Carolina?

It’s one of those questions that may not come up until you’re actually facing it.

For some parents, changing a child’s last name after separation or divorce can feel like an important next step. But in North Carolina, whether a name change is possible can depend on things like parental consent, the child’s age, and the specific circumstances.

Our latest blog walks through the process and answers some of the questions parents commonly have, including what happens if the other parent does not agree.

If this is something you’ve been wondering about, this is a helpful place to start.
