“Are you ready for succession?” is usually too broad to produce a useful answer.

Owners can respond more clearly when advisors ask about specific parts of the transition: personal financial needs, the company’s dependence on the owner, the successor’s experience, management relationships, and family expectations.

A structured conversation gives clients language for concerns they may not have known how to raise. It also helps the advisor determine where deeper discovery is needed.

Use the Succession Matrix® to organize your next client conversation and leave with a clearer picture of what should happen next: https://lttr.ai/AuA5A

In our latest Member Spotlight, Tara from Forvis Mazars US shares how a clear framework helps dealership families uncover those assumptions while ownership and leadership decisions are still taking shape.

Ask a family four questions and see if the answers match. Who owns the business? Who runs it day to day? Who hires and pays senior leaders? What decisions need shareholder approval?

Run this four-question test with your next client before the ownership conversation starts: https://lttr.ai/AuCyW

Assumptions create more conflict than disagreements. The moment someone starts guessing someone else’s intent, the meeting shifts off track.

Preparing a successor includes the relationships that keep the operation running.

Bankers, lenders, suppliers, advisors, and other trusted contacts may have worked with the senior generation for decades. Introducing the successor early gives those relationships time to develop before responsibility changes hands.

See how Don Richards, CFP®, CPFA®, CSP®, AFFP® helps farm and ranch families prepare the next generation for the full scope of leadership.
