The 4 Quick Points:

1. Your permanent resident status does NOT expire with the card.
It only ends if you abandon it (like living outside the US for too long), commit certain serious crimes, or formally give it up. The green card is just proof not the status itself.

2. An expired green card creates real headaches in daily life.
Employers may struggle to verify your Form I-9 (it can block new jobs or re-verification).

3. Airlines usually won’t let you board an international flight.
Re-entering the US becomes risky and complicated.
Many states won’t renew your driver’s license without valid proof of status.

4. There’s no fine for letting it expire, but it can hurt you later.
It doesn’t look great on your citizenship (naturalization) application if you’ve been careless with your documentation for a long time.
Fix it immediately file Form I-90 right now (even if it’s already expired).

Once USCIS accepts it, you’ll get a receipt notice that automatically extends your green card’s validity for 36 months from the original expiration date. Carry the expired card + this receipt as proof for work, travel, and ID purposes.
