Starting a business takes more than forming an LLC and getting a tax ID.
An operating agreement is one of the things I wish more business owners thought about from the very beginning.
An operating agreement lays out how your business will be run, who is responsible for what, and what should happen if you’re no longer able to manage the business yourself. It gives everyone involved a clearer understanding of how the business should continue when circumstances change.
It’s part of building a business with the future in mind. It gives you the opportunity to put important decisions in writing while you’re here and able to make them, instead of leaving those decisions for your family, employees, or partners to figure out later.
Because that planning reaches far beyond the business itself. The people who depend on what you’ve built may all be affected by what happens next.
Don’t just plan for how your business begins. Plan for how it continues.
If your business has grown but your planning hasn’t grown with it, this may be a good time to revisit what you have in place.
