Our team is looking forward to attending the Cascade Conference this weekend!

Jackson and his team go just about every year. Events like these provide valuable opportunities to hear from elected officials, policy leaders, and candidates for public office.

We're particularly interested in hearing from the candidates for the Washington State Supreme Court and discussing the legal issues facing Washington in the years ahead.

Last week, Judge Robert Lasnik declined to revisit Washington’s redrawn legislative district map despite recent guidance from the U.S. Supreme Court on the constitutional limits of race-based map drawing.

When race becomes the driving factor in redistricting, courts have a responsibility to ask hard constitutional questions.

Election law was a critical issue in 2024, when Jackson Maynard spoke on behalf of our client, Citizen Action Defense Fund and it remains just as critical today.

Jackson and his team continue to fight for constitutional principles in our courts, and this testimony is part of that broader effort.

When legislators write policy into laws, sometimes they write bills that try to push the bounds of what is or isn't constitutional and let the courts figure it out. But legislators swear an oath to uphold the state constitution with the laws they pass, and that means adhering to court precedents. Legislators shouldn't write laws in hopes it goes to courts to change rulings.

Honored I had the chance to chat with Olympia Master Builders at their Contractors Roundtable. We focused on contract fundamentals—where deals break down and how to avoid paying for it later.

These aren’t just for contractors; they apply to almost any business.

We recently filed an initiative on behalf of ReachOut Washington to overturn the new Pierce County sales tax increase. Families are already feeling the burden of increasing cost of living, and a new increase on an already regressive tax doesn't make sense. Public safety is important, but that's why the City Council needs to prioritize those concerns within the existing budget.
If you want to stay up to date on the progress of this initiative or anything else I'm working on, sign up for our free newsletter. From news updates to legal insights, this is a free resource that you won't want to miss. [Link to join the newsletter is below]

BUSINESS OWNERS: It is an active time for businesses in Washington. Regulatory change arrives either through sweeping legislation or through incremental — and often confusing — adjustments.

Most businesses assume that if you're trying to comply, that’s enough. The better move is to check how your compliance would withstand scrutiny — from a regulator, a competitor, or a court.

If you would like to discuss how recent regulatory developments may affect your business, click the link in the comments.

This week, we filed a brief on behalf of Save Vancouver Streets, following the Vancouver City Council’s decision not to advance an initiative that qualified for the ballot. Rather than moving the measure forward, the City adopted an alternative, unlawful approach, leaving judicial review as the only remaining option.

This is not the first time a state or local government has failed to properly process a qualifying initiative. This case serves as another reminder that the right to petition our government is among the most fundamental in our legal system.
