Legislative and executive political candidates often get lots of attention, but the judicial system is an extremely important part of making sure our state upholds the law in an unbiased, just manner. Scott Edwards is one of several great candidates running for the Washington State Supreme Court. I was glad to host a meet and greet with him yesterday.

Winston Churchill famously said "Democracy is the worst form of government except for all of the others." I was grateful to emcee the candidate forum hosted by the Thurston County Republican women's club. Local elections are incredibly important, and seeing so many people come to hear from the candidates was encouraging. The most important political decisions are made closest to home and a democracy is kept healthy with an informed public.

We recently hired Alyssa as our summer legal intern. She's attending UW with future plans to attend law school, ultimately hoping to focus on disability and education law. She currently serves on the ASUW Student Senate, participates in the Phi Alpha Delta Pre-Law Fraternity, and volunteers with the Special Olympics and Best Buddies organization at UW. We're excited to have her on board, join us in giving her a warm welcome!

In order to try to halt unpopular road projects that can create (rather than alleviate) congestion, Save Vancouver Streets followed the proper procedure to put an initiative on their ballot. The City vetoed the right of the people to weigh in and make that decision, so we took them to court. This is only the latest of many attacks on the people's right to self-govern, from Whatcom County ruling tax repeals were ineligible for initiative or the legislature proposing a law to add punitive barriers for the signature collection process. Ultimately, the government of Washington derives its authority from its citizens, and we are proud to defend those rights.

The oral arguments for Save Vancouver Streets will be in the Court of Appeals, set on September 11.

In some circumstances, that's true! Under Washington law, however, a party claiming ownership through adverse possession must first prove five separate elements.

We currently have a property dispute headed to trial that turns on exactly these issues. The case serves as a reminder that property disputes often turn on the difference between what people believe they own and what the law recognizes.
