Horry County Homeowners — take notice! Even if you have successfully applied for your 4% primary residence status, this audit could still affect you.

Keep an eye out in coming weeks for these bright green envelopes that say "Horry County Exemption Audit Notice".

If you receive one, please do not throw it out!

This is your reminder that the Assessor's Office is missing documentation regarding legal residence applications. Missing documents can be submitted via email, fax or mail.

These notices are being sent this week to anyone who was given "provisional or conditional" approval of their legal residence status.

The deadline to turn in missing documents to avoid a rebill at the higher rate is May 31, 2026.

Heads up, friends!

We wanted to share something important that could save you (or someone you know) a lot of trouble.

The fraudsters are always looking for a new way to separate you from your money.

There’s been an increase in attempted fraud using lookalike email domains. At first glance, these emails seem totally legitimate — they might appear to come from your bank, a coworker, or a company you trust. But if you look closely, the email address is slightly off.

Think things like, swapping a lowercase “L” for an uppercase “I”, adding an extra letter (like “amaz0n” instead of “amazon”), using a different domain ending (like “.co” instead of “.com”)

These small changes are easy to miss, especially when the message creates urgency — like asking you to click a link, reset a password, or send sensitive information.

A few quick tips to stay safe:

- Always double-check the sender’s full email address — not just the display name.

- Hover over links before clicking to see where they actually go

- Be cautious of urgent or unusual requests, even if they seem to come from someone you know

- When in doubt, contact the person or company directly using a trusted method

-Scammers are getting more creative, but a little extra attention goes a long way. Stay safe out there and feel free to share this so others are aware too!
