Serious talk on these 457 plans…if your agency is offering, you young guys need to listen and start investing!

The 457 edge most cops ignore

Unlike a 401(k), many governmental 457(b) plans let you take money after you separate — with no 10% early-withdrawal penalty.

That is the bridge. Leave at 50–55, tap the 457, and cover the gap to pension or Social Security without the usual IRA/401(k) tax hit. Ordinary income tax still applies. The penalty often does not.

Most officers find this the year they hang it up. By then the contribution rate sat frozen for a decade.

Use it on purpose:

• Confirm your plan is a governmental 457(b) and what “separation” actually means in writing

• Don’t treat the 457 like a second checking account while you’re still on the job

• Don’t roll it into an IRA on autopilot if you might need the no-penalty window

• Build the bridge before you need it — percentage of every raise, not leftover OT

A pension is the foundation. The 457 is the part you control — including when you can touch it.
