Fall is the prettiest driving season in Wisconsin and quietly one of the trickiest.
A layer of wet leaves has roughly the traction of ice, and it hides the lane lines and potholes underneath. Sunrise and sunset now land right in the middle of rush hour, straight into your eyes. Morning fog settles into every river valley between here and Cedarburg. And the deer rut is coming — WisDOT logged 17,432 deer-related crashes in 2024, with October and November the worst two months of the year.
None of it is a reason to stay home. All of it is a reason to add five minutes and a little following distance.
