A special day for the Miami-Dade legal community as Judge Rohaidy celebrated his judicial investiture.

Jaime Lapidus and Diego Merino proudly represented Piotrowski Law at today’s ceremony. Chad Piotrowski sent his warmest regards but was handling a federal sentencing at the same time—the practice of law never stops. He was glad members of the team could be there to celebrate this well-deserved occasion.

33 cases closed in August. 25 dismissed. One went to prison.

Our clients walked into August facing 422 years, one life sentence, and 53 years of minimum mandatory time. 76% of those cases were dismissed outright — no trial, no plea, no record.

Every prison year on this board came from one case.

We handle the most serious and complex cases in the criminal justice system. That one client was looking at 30 years to life — the bottom right corner of the federal sentencing table, the worst square on the grid. It doesn’t get any more serious than that.

Our track record of avoiding prison and getting cases dismissed speaks for itself — and with the volume we handle and the severity it carries, it’s expected to see a prison number from time to time.

We don’t hide from it. We celebrate saving a client from the life sentence he was otherwise facing.

It’s hard for some people to see that as a win. But the battle-tested warriors out there know exactly what it means.

Can you travel while your criminal case is pending? Usually yes — but it depends.

Domestic travel is generally not the problem. International travel is where people get in trouble. Depending on whether it’s a misdemeanor or a felony, state or federal, we may need to file a motion for permission to travel — dates, itinerary, when you leave, when you’re back — and get a court order before you go.

Don’t book the trip and hope. Ask first.

"Diversion is not a favor anyone hands out, and it is not automatic," a spokesperson for the firm said. "The State Attorney's Office decides who gets in, and that call often gets made before arraignment. Attorneys who have worked in that office know what a screener looks at when the file lands on the desk. A case that qualifies on paper still gets turned down when nobody puts the client's side of it in front of the right person early enough."

July was the month of the quiet win.

No headlines. No cameras. Just 19 cases closed and 13 of them dismissed — a 68% dismissal rate — against 253 years of combined exposure.

19 cases closed.
13 dismissals.
68% dismissal rate.
Zero days of jail.

The two prison sentences we did have were both federal, and both ended better than they should have.

One client was facing 35 years on a 27.5 million dollar fraud case.

He received 21 months.

His co-defendants got 30, 35, and 36 months — he got the best sentence of the group, because we spent the case proving how peripheral his role actually was.

Another federal client was facing 20 years on a 2.7 million dollar fraud case and received a 33 months on a case that could have gone far worse.

Then there are the results that never sound impressive until you know what was on the line.

A client facing 16 years on an enhanced occupied burglary with a mask walked out on probation.

Another facing 15 for importation of co***ne walked out with a withhold and 18 months of probation — no conviction on his record at all and an agreement to vacate his sentence when probation is done.

And my favorite kind of file: six criminal traffic citations that had been hanging over a client for months. Small on paper. Not small to him. Every one of them dismissed.

That’s the part people miss about this work. The 35-year federal case and the six criminal traffic tickets get the same effort, because to the person living it, it’s the same weight.

The numbers tell part of the story.

The people behind them are why we do this.

“It wasn’t mine.”

That sentence has convicted more people in Florida than you’d believe.

If police find a gun or drugs in your car, they still have to prove you knew it was there. The second you explain whose it is — “my cousin left it” — you just handed them the knowledge element.

Say nothing. Ask for a lawyer. Let them try to prove it.
