The Trademark Office denied registration of the mark "Chanel" for “real estate development
and construction of commercial, residential and hotel property” by a third party not associated with the luxury bag maker. The Trademark Office found that "Chanel" is a famous and distinctive mark, and registration by a third party, despite having nothing to do with luxury goods, would result in "dilution by blurring" of the Chanel brand.
